About the Item

A perfectly Impressionistic work with beautifully loose, almost pointillist brushstrokes, focussing on the scintillating light and the remote hilltop atmosphere. Artist Frans Hogerwaard was born in 1882 in Weltevreden in the Dutch colony of Java. He initially studied the cello, then Fine Art at the Rijksacademie of Amsterdam, where he became friends with Tjeerd Bottema and Wim de Haas. He subsequently worked in Paris and obtained the prestigious French Prix de Rome for the most promising young artist in 1910. This allowed him to spend extended period of time in Rome, Florence, Venice and Madrid as part of the prize. It was near Spanish capital that the work presented here was painted - looking over its roofs, in the nearby hills. An oil on canvas laid down on board by the artist, the painting measures 23.5 x 34 cm at sight and is signed at the lower right. The overall framed size is 38 x 49 cm.

The village is just a short walk away from Grez-sur-Loing, where John Singer Sargent, Francis Brooks Chadwick, Robert Vonnoh, Edward Simmons...

American Impressionist: Springtime, a sunny path in France 19thC oil painting
By William Baptiste Baird
Located in Norwich, GB
This beautiful and light filled painting testifies of a new dawn: in the 1880s the landscape and animalier artist William Baird turns to Impressionism. Our Sunny Path, with looser brushwork and lighter colours, convey the fleeting nature of the present. Our lovely oil on canvas may well be homage to Claude Monet - according to Baird's inscription on the stretcher, it was painted in Mantes, which is only about 6 miles from Vétheuil, where Monet was living and working in the 1880s! William Baptiste Baird was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1847, but as an adult moved to Paris to perfect his painting technique. In Paris, Baird studied under Adolphe Yvon...
