About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Krause' for Franz Emil Krause (German, 1836-1900) and painted circa 1865. Framed in a finely finished, hand-carved, gilt-wood and gesso frame. Framed Size 42.5 x 3.5 x 60.5 inches Born in Niederschönhausen on the outskirts of Berlin, this German landscape and seascape painter exhibited widely and with success during the late nineteenth century. After his marriage, he spent a year in Southport, England and in Conwy, North Wales, where he painted romantic views of the local countryside. During this period, Krause also painted ruggedly romantic views of the highlands of Scotland. From 1875, he lived and painted in Holland. Franz Emil Krause exhibited internationally with success including at the Berlin Academy ('Landscape in Schleswig', 1870, and 'Portuguese Coastal Scene', 1872). The artist's work is held in numerous private and public collections including in the Southport Gallery in England and in the permanent collection of the State Museum in Riga which retains two landscapes, 'Rocky Coastline in England' and 'Dutch Winter Landscape'. Franz Emil Krause is listed in all relevant art reference works including Benezit's Dictionary of Artists and the Thieme-Becker Lexikon. We are pleased to offer this large and luminous coastal scene painted when the artist was about thirty years old.
