Fred Darge (1900-1978)
Friedrich Ernst Darge Born: March 1 1900 Rendsburg, Germany Died: April 10 1978 Dallas, Texas Entered the U.S. ; Jan. 14 1923 at Port Arthur, Texas. By 1924 he was in Chicago painting under the W.P.A. Artists policy and attending the Art Institute of Chicago from where he graduated. While in Chicago he painted and made model sail boats, an interest he acquired in the German Merchant Marine at the age of 16. He also married, became a father, and managed a painting trip throughout Minnesota and the Dakota's with his wife and son. By July of 1933 he had separated from his wife and son in Chicago and had settled in San Antonio, Texas as a starving artist. In September, 1935 he moved to Dallas where he finished his paintings during the winter months and spent the summers painting on the ranches in West Texas and New Mexico. He entered the Army on Nov. 11 1942, served in the south Pacific and was honorably discharged on March 22 1944. He went to work in the defense industry for North American Aviation as a technical illustrator until the wars end. Back in Dallas, Fred bought a WWII ambulance and converted it to an artist's studio-van and spent the years from 1946 to 1978 traveling and painting throughout Texas and New Mexico, returning to Dallas to finish his paintings, carve, build and sail his model boats. His later years were spent at his studio adjacent to the Dallas Art Association where he also acted as an Instructor. His paintings have been exhibited in Chicago, New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Austin, Taos, and Sante Fe . A photo of Mae West looking at Fred's Self-portrait was published in the "Dallas News" 5-6-'39. She was concluding an engagement at the Majestic Theater in Dallas and between shows previewed his exhibition. An extensive biographical article is in the "Dallas News" of 2-23-47 and also on 3-16-41

Dwight Holmes (1900-1986)
Dwight C. Holmes, known for ornamental architectural sculpting as well as painting and etching, was born in Albany, Oregon, 1900. He began formal art training in Galveston high school; studied five years in Texas Christian University, serving also as student assistant and art editor for College annual. He received his Certificate of Art and Bachelor of Arts Degree and became a faculty member in the Art Department. He left teaching to serve a five-year apprenticeship to achieve membership in Modelers and Sculptors of America. He studied with George Franz of Germany and Michael Lengyl of Austria. He has done ornamental architectural sculpturing over forty years and enjoys a broad art horizon that includes sculpting, painting, designing, ceramics, carving, gold-leafing, restoration, etc. He paints in any medium and any subject matter, but prefers oils and landscapes. He studied at Texas Christian University with Mary Sue Darter Coleman, Mrs. R. E. Cockerell, Sam P. Ziegler, and others. In California, he studied with George Flowers, at the Pasadena Art Institute, and in workshops with Lee McCarthy, Leonard Boreman, and etching with Bernard Wall. He has held membership in Painters' Club and Fort Worth Art Association; American Federation of Art; River Art Group and Coppini Academy of Fine Arts in San Antonio; Southwest Ceramic Society; San Angelo Art Club and Arts Council, and others. Dwight Holmes began winning art awards at age 13, and has continued receiving numerous honors and awards over the years. He has held art exhibits all over the Southwest, from Florida to California. His works have been shown in Boston, Cleveland, New York, Kansas City, Columbia, Mo. and elsewhere. He has painted along the Gulf, East and West Coasts; throughout Texas; in Mexico, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, California, Tennessee, Georgia, in the Great Smokies, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Red Rock Country, Hawaii, etc. He maintains a studio at 2401 Sherwood Way, San Angelo, Texas, but enjoys doing much of his painting out on locations, His interests include: juror for shows; giving criticisms and appraisals, and conducting art workshops and art colonies. In addition to museums works by Dwight C. Holmes may be seen in many private collections including: Mr. Levi Cole, banker, Canyon, Texas; Dr. A. McChesney, M.D., Columbia, Mo.; S. Edward Lee Reichert (1919-2011)
Edward Reichert, architect, designer and artist, is a native Texan who has combined regional, national and international study and practice of the visual art and architecture since 1936. He is a versatile artist and designer, skilled in creating quality landscapes, portraits, architectural, western, religious and varied work in all media. After 36 years of architectural practice based in Houston in which he was involved in the design of more than 400 regional and international projects, he now devotes full time to painting.
Best known of his art works are his designs of stained and faceted art glass which include 100 panels designed for the First United Methodist Church of Houston. In 1983, he wrote and jointly published with the Church, Windows Sharing God’s Caring, an art book with photographs by his wife Elizabeth, illustrating and describing these panels and the historic sanctuary windows.
While attending The University of Texas in Austin he served as art editor of the university publication Architecture, Engineering and Industry (1938-41). After receiving his Bachelor of Architecture Degree and the Alpha Rho Chi Architectural Medal in 1941, he was awarded scholarships for continued studies a M.I.T., Harvard, and Yale. As a Naval Reserve Officer during World II, he authored and illustrated Naval Intelligence publications. He became a Registered Architect in Texas in 1947, AIA member since 1951 and NCARB certified since 1974. He has worked and studied in England, Europe and Canada.
