About the Item

Mario Gachet (Turin, 1879-1981) "Lake Landscape," small oil on cardboard signed lower right, early 20th century ca. 1920. In its original frame. On the back is a newspaper clipping celebrating his death. Measurements cardboard 25x19 cm frame 47 x 39 cm "These are melancholy paintings ... he mourns the desolate abandonment of things. He is a landscape painter of rare effectiveness, and a spiritual one: in nature he portrays a mysterious and poetry-creating absence." from "Il Piemonte" of October 23, 1923 on the occasion of the XXV exhibition of the Amici dell'Arte. Mario Gachet was born in Turin to a family originally from Saint-Etienne in France. His father, a lawyer and owner of a velvet factory, was passionate about art and was a friend of Vittorio Cavalleri, a leading artistic figure in Turin's cultural world at the turn of the century. It was Cavalleri who discovered young Mario's talent by referring him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Turin. Gachet has been present since 1902 at the Turin quadrennial exhibitions held at the Circolo degli Artisti, from which, in 1969, he received the plaque of dean of active painters. In 1911 he organized a solo exhibition in London, and from 1914 he was present at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Turin with numerous works. He traveled widely and produced a considerable amount of work, experimenting with various painting techniques including church frescoes and miniatures. His expertise was also recognized by the House of Savoy, which purchased the work "Souls and God" presented at the 1914 Milan Exposition. His family life was marked by some sad events. Married in his early twenties, he was widowed after four years with his son Benvenuto, whom he lost in 1928 when he was only twenty-eight. His painting had a singular and personal character that on the one hand placed him in a historical era and on the other revealed his soul. Shipping by MBE, custom-made OSB case, UPS or DHL courier.
