The painting is presented and supplied in its original frame (which is shown in these photographs). This piece is in superb condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower right. Previously with the Thackeray Gallery, London. One of the most popular Welsh artists of this current generation, Gareth Parry was born in Blaenau Ffestiniog, a slate quarrying town in North Wales, in 1951. After leaving school he went to study at Manchester College of Art from 1969-1970. His formal studies were curtailed because left before completing the course, or, in his own words, “I managed to get myself kicked out for various reasons”. He returned home and worked at a local mine for a couple of years, following in the family tradition, before leaving and starting to paint again. He refers to this time as doing “anything to make a living by the brush”, undertaking commissions and producing illustrations, mainly in landscape and still life. Throughout these early years, he also worked as a labourer to make ends meet. From 1973-78 he worked mainly as a book illustrator. For over a decade he only painted ‘en plein air’, outside in all weathers. He regards this a crucial to his development as an artist and recalls it as “the best training I could ever have had.”. He then began to work more in his studio and from memory, which he thinks of “as the companion of observation”. Parry paints using a traditional brush, but also uses a palette knife, using considerable freedom of expression and “letting the paint do the work”. From 1980 Gareth Parry decided to concentrate mainly on exhibition work and since then has exhibited widely in London, including the Thackery Gallery, and throughout Wales. He has works in many notable private collections, as well as public ones, including the National Library of Wales, Coutts & Co. Bank, Gwynedd County Council and Oriel Ynys. He is best known today for his landscapes and seascapes, which are very much about mood, more abstract than figurative, capturing the effects of the weather and natural elements. He says that his works are atmospheric, more about “being there” than specific to a location. He describes his subjects as mainly “Cymru y Cymry”, namely land and people. His figurative works often reflect his own concerns about the changing social landscape of his native Wales. In 2006 Gareth Parry was elected a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. © Big Sky Fine Art This stunning original oil on canvas by Gareth Parry is a bold kaleidoscope of colour and light. It depicts a coastal scene, no doubt off the west coast of Wales, with tall cliffs in the background, rising out of the deep waters of the Atlantic. In the foreground is a single small rowing boat, with a figure seated in the rear. This is a local fisherman, setting his pots in the hope of catching crabs, or perhaps even a lobster! The sea is calm and the colours that are reflected from the cliffs and into the sea are vibrant, capturing the sun’s rays and sparkling, suggesting that this is perhaps in the late afternoon. The shy above is a glorious blue, with many tones. The overall effect, as designed by the artist, is to perfectly capture the mood of the moment. It is at once an uplifting and calming scene.

Low Tide On The Minnows Cornwall Padstow Framed Cornish Impasto Oil Painting

Frame size 25.4 inches x 45.3 inches ( 64.5cm x 115cm ). Available for sale; this original impasto oil painting is by the Cornish artist Nancy Bailey and is dated 1972. The painting is presented and supplied in its original frame (which is shown in these photographs). The painted surface has benefitted from a light clean and a new preserving varnish coat has been applied. This vintage painting is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower right and on the reverse it is titled and signed again. Nancy Bailey was born in 1913 and started her working life at the age of 15. As a teenager she used her father’s camera to take photographs of West Country views, many of which were used to produce postcards, which sold throughout the country. This early talent demonstrated her knowledge and appreciation of light and composition that later enabled her to create the beautiful paintings for which she became internationally renowned. Her family moved frequently throughout the south west, before settling in Ireland where for thirteen years she produced high quality marquetry pictures, which sold all over the world. Nancy only started painting seriously when she returned to Cornwall in her fifties. Her painting career, though started somewhat late, continued over forty years. Nancy worked with a palette knife and never used a brush. This gives her work its distinctive texture and captures the landscape and light. Nancy became acclaimed as one of the leading palette knife artists in the UK. Although Nancy travelled widely, including a safari trip to South Africa with the acclaimed nature artist David Shepherd her best work is arguably of the coasts and rivers of the West Country, which she loved so much. Nancy died in 2012, since when demand for her original works has increased. © Big Sky Fine Art The Minnows Islands are a group of large rocks...

This vintage painting is now in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower right. Previously with the Howard Roberts Gallery, Cardiff. Considered one of the best coastal painters of the 20th century, Gyrth Russell was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in April 1892. He was the youngest of 8 children. His father was a Canadian MP and a Supreme High Court Judge for Nova Scotia. At the age of fourteen, Russell began his artistic career at Halifax School of Art, and quickly graduated to the School of Art at Boston, Massachusetts. His first job was as a draughtsman in the Public Works Department of Canada, in Halifax. It was during this period he saw and sketched the cable ship Mackay Bennett returning to her Halifax Station, her decks piled high with coffins containing bodies found after the Titanic Disaster. In 1911 Russell left Canada to study at the Academie Julian and Academie Calorossi in Paris. In 1914 at the outbreak of War, he left France for London where he was commissioned, under the command of Lord Beaverbrook, as an official War Artist for the Canadian Sector, and spent most of 1918 in Northern France painting the landscapes and coasts travelled by the Canadian military during the conflict. During the course of the First World War he worked with amongst others, Augustus John, William Orpen & Frank Brangwyn, who greatly influenced him. Many of his earliest works are of landscapes and coasts travelled by the Canadian military in the conflict. During the War Russell also made etchings and poster prints for sale to help popularize and support the war effort abroad. He took part in the Canadian War Memorial Exhibition in London in 1919. Between the Wars, Russell earned his living as an artist in film studios, designing Railway Posters, Lecturing and Writing. He also illustrated books on the geography of Nova Scotia and Western Britain. Russell enjoyed considerable success between the Wars, exhibiting extensively at the major galleries, and was elected to membership of the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters and Watercolorists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Marine Artists as well as being an active member of the Langham...

Cornish Fishing Boats At First Light Mid-20th Century Cornwall Original Painting
By Joan Gillchrest
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Joan Gillchrest. English ( b.1918 - d.2008 ). Cornish Fishing Boats At First Light. Oil On Paper Mounted On Board. Signed Monogram Lower Right. Image size 26.2 inches x 22 inches ( 66.5cm x 56cm ). Frame size 35.8 inches x 31.3 inches ( 91cm x 79.5cm ). Available for sale; this original oil painting is by the Cornish artist Joan Gillchrest and dates from around the late 1980s. The oil painting is presented and supplied in a sympathetic new replacement frame (which is shown in these photographs) that suits the artwork’s color palette and behind non-reflective Tru Vue UltraVue® UV70 glass. This painting is in excellent condition and presents superbly. It wants for nothing and is ready to hang and display. The painting is signed with her monogram lower right. Joan Gillchrest is one of Mousehole’s and Cornwall’s most recognised and celebrated artists. Her vibrant art sits firmly alongside other great artists of the St. Ives School from the 1960s. She was born Joan Scott in London in 1918 into a wealthy and illustrious family. She was the third of four children. Her father was a pioneer of radiology – and a skilful caricaturist - and her Australian mother was an accomplished pianist. Sir George Gilbert Scott was her great grandfather, who designed the imposing Midland Grand Hotel at St. Pancras as well as countless parish churches. Grandfather, George Gilbert Scott Jnr, is remembered for three Cambridge colleges, Christ’s, Pembroke and Peterhouse. Her uncle Giles, (Giles Gilbert Scott) to whom Joan was close, is best known for his magnificent Anglican Liverpool Cathedral, Battersea Power Station and the iconic and ubiquitous red telephone box. Coming from such a long line of eminent architects it is not surprising that Joan always loved architecture and the churches and chapels of the Penwith peninsula feature prominently in her work. She said that buildings were “in her blood”. Her early childhood was spent at the family home in Buckinghamshire, but she was a difficult child – the family hired one nanny for her and one for the other three children- and at one point she was sent to Upper Chine School in the Isle of Wright to give her family some peace! She was however the apple of her father’s eye and he encouraged her obvious artistic talent. In 1934, aged only 15 but encouraged by her parents, she went to Paris to study art and learn the language. There she met Gwen John and studied in various studios, sometimes working as a model. In 1936 she enrolled at the Grosvenor School of Art and subsequently studied there under Iain McNab, whom she described as a marvelous teacher. Her early artistic career was very promising; she first exhibited at the Royal Academy when she was just 18 and showed works at the New England Art Club in 1937 and the London Group in 1938. When the Second World War broke out Joan was 21. She took a crash course in nursing and first aid and volunteered as an ambulance driver for Westminster Hospital. She later drove a mobile rescue unit. She was not able to paint much during the war but kept in touch with McNab; when the area around St Paul’s was blitzed, leaving the cathedral relatively unscathed, McNab got Joan and a few others to paint the scene. Her work, created with a thick paint and a palette knife, hung in the art school for many years. Joan’s painting career stalled in the 1940s. In 1942 she married a barrister and Coldstream Guards officer Samuel Gillchrest, and they soon had a son, then a daughter. With a young family, she had little time to paint, and had to hide the work she did produce as her husband thought that work as an artist was beneath them. Sadly, the marriage broke down and in 1953 they divorced. In leaving a difficult marriage at this time, she forfeited money, security and her previous place in society. Despite the huge changes in her life, her overwhelming desire to paint remained constant. She ignored the disapproval of her friends and family and started to explore new ways of expressing herself on canvas. She moved to a studio in Chelsea, an area much favored by the artistic community. To support herself, her children and her painting she also found regular work as an artist’s model. She was tall, strikingly good looking and combined elegance with bohemianism. She also carried an air of mystery from her rich and privileged past, and so she became sought after as a fashion model. In the flat below hers lived an artist who had enjoyed some professional acclaim, Adrian Ryan...
