About the Item
Gaston Frederic De Burggraff
Canvas Size: 15 x 21" (38 x 53cm)
Outside Frame Size: 22 x 28" (56 x 71cm)
A wonderful example of French Impressionism allied with the Barbizon style of painting. The beautifully painted distance seen through the trees shows a true feeling, and a knowledge, of depth and an understanding of light and dark that Burggraff has.
Flourished c1891
This artist was born in Dublin in 1857, although he came from French ancestry with his parents coming over from France a generation earlier.
He was a pupil of Cormon and first entered the Society of French Artists in 1889. He regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon and became an associate- receiving an honourable mention in 1891. In the Universal Exhibition of 1900 he obtained a bronze medal and another medal in the following year.
He painted a variety of subjects including landscapes, still life and marines. His style lent itself beautifully to using oil paints, which he invariably did.
His work was, and still is, highly regarded and he gained special recognition in 1909 when he won the “Raigecourt-Goyon” prize.

George Boyle Impressionist oil painting, Barbizon School of sheep grazing
Located in Harkstead, GB
A wonderful example of a Barbizon inspired landscape painted by the "Catford Corot" from the late 19th Century. This picturesque view has the typical Barbizon elements with a shepherdess and her flock at the edge of a forest. Beautifully presented in a good quality hardwood frame - a very atmospheric piece in ready to hang condition.

George Boyle is perhaps the best known English painter inspired by the Barbizon School. In fact he is known as the "Catford Corot" as his paintings have such a close resemblance to the school's main exponent, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot. The "Catford" element of this nickname corresponds to the area near Greenwich...
