About the Item

Sunset at Kullen near Mölle in the very south of Sweden. Between two steep cliffs, a narrow stony beach unfolds, offering a tranquil vantage point over a still sea toward Denmark. The sky is painted in gentle sunset tones, casting a soft glow over the scene. A lone sailboat drifts on the horizon, adding life and scale to the vast maritime expanse. The oil-on-canvas is signed and dated "G Achen 1883". Exhibited: Randers Art museum in Randers in Jutland, Denmark. 2013-2014. Georg Nicolai Achen was born in 1860 Frederikssund, Denmark, and moved with his family to Copenhagen in 1871 He trained under Vilhelm Kyhn at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1877 to 1883, and later studied at the prestigious Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler under P.S. Krøyer (1851-1909), one the formost artists in Denmark at the time. Throughout the 1880s, Achen painted landscapes, but from the 1890s onward, he became one of Denmark’s most sought-after portraitists Achen arrived firmly rooted in the naturalist tradition, later blending subtleties of light and form inspired by his Paris and Italian studies (in 1886 and 1888) He was influenced by Krøyer as well as by the subdued interiors of Vilhelm Hammershøi, adopting sparse compositions and a muted palette of grays, browns, and soft pinks. His impression of light, especially in landscapes, also reflects an awareness of impressionist techniques encountered during his travels He debuted at Charlottenborg in 1883 and later showcased his work at Den Frie Udstilling in 1896. In 1890, Achen was awarded the prestigious Thorvaldsen Medal for his portrait Min Moders Portræt (“My Mother’s Portrait”) From 1893 to 1896, he served on the academy’s council and continued to exhibit extensively Achen’s works are held in notable Danish public collections, including the Hirschsprung Collection and the museum at Frederiksborg Castle Additionally, a significant number of his interior paintings and personal works were donated by his family and are displayed at Museum Østjylland in Randers Kullen Nature Reserve (Kullaberg) and its lighthouse are crowned jewels in southwestern Skåne, Sweden—where land meets sea in dramatic cliffs and sweeping views over the Øresund Strait. The lighthouse, one of the oldest in Sweden (dating back to the 16th century), has long served as a beacon for navigation and a symbol of coastal endurance. Historically, the landscape around Kullen has inspired many artists who found its rugged beauty and serene vistas ripe for visual interpretation. Its sheer cliffs, merging sea and sky, afforded painters both dramatic and contemplative subjects. In the era of Georg Achen, the Nordic interest in atmospheric landscapes and natural light aligned perfectly with motifs such as Sunset at Kullen, blending realism with romantic sensibility. The interplay of light, water, and rocky terrain offered painters a powerful metaphor for transition—between land and sea, day and night, tradition and change. Size without frame H61cm W46cm.
