About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
"Midnight on the Water and How It Used to Be" by George Callaghan is a captivating exploration of a mystical nocturnal landscape, where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur in a mesmerizing display of surrealism. In this enigmatic painting, the focal points of the scene draw the viewer into a world of mystery and intrigue.
At the heart of the composition lies a sharp white moon, its luminous glow casting an ethereal light over the landscape below. The washed blue sky hints at the late hour, evoking a sense of midnight stillness and tranquility. As the moonlight bathes the scene in its soft radiance, shadows dance across the landscape, imbuing it with an air of enchantment.
Leading hills on either side of the canvas draw the eye outward, creating a sense of depth and perspective. On the left side, the hill reaches a towering cliff, its purple-toned texture adding an element of drama to the scene. Mystical-looking bendy and rounded trees dot the landscape, their twisted forms adding to the surreal atmosphere of the painting.
Soft, ethereal water flows between the hills, its presence lending a sense of serenity and boundlessness to the image. The water's gentle ripples soften the landscape and reflect the moonlight, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow.
The landscape feels both familiar and otherworldly, evoking a sense of nostalgia and wonder in equal measure. There is an undeniable air of mystery that shrouds the painting, inviting viewers to unravel its secrets and uncover the stories that lie within.
Signed by the artist, "Midnight on the Water and How It Used to Be" is a captivating artwork that beckons viewers to lose themselves in its haunting beauty. Whether viewed in person at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea or online, this mesmerizing painting promises to transport viewers to a world of magic and imagination, where the mysteries of the night unfold in all their splendor.
Artist Biography:
George Callaghan, born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1941, embarked on his artistic journey at a young age. Leaving school at 15, he began his career as an apprentice Commercial Artist at Nicholson and Bass. A year later, he secured a Scholarship to study Art at the Belfast College of Art, marking the beginning of his formal artistic education. Following his studies, Callaghan ventured to Dublin to work as a designer before relocating to London. His career then took him to Australia, where he spent several years working as an Art Director for leading advertising agencies. At the age of 32, he settled in Tasmania, where he resided for many years before a brief stint in France. Despite his travels, Callaghan maintains strong ties to his native Ireland, regularly returning to sketch and reconnect with friends. The move to Tasmania marked a significant shift in Callaghan’s artistic focus. He established a studio where he continues to create, alongside crafting musical instruments and mastering the art of playing the harp. Revered as Australia’s premier harp maker and a prominent figure in Celtic Harp music, Callaghan has released several recordings showcasing his musical talents. However, it is Callaghan’s paintings that have garnered enduring interest. His works, whether rendered in Acrylic, Oil, or Pastel, possess a distinct narrative quality infused with elements of his Northern Irish heritage.
Despite attending Art College, Callaghan attributes much of his artistic development to his experience in advertising, emphasizing the importance of technique over formal education. His paintings, characterized by a naive style, often feature landscapes devoid of depth, with stylized chimneys emitting puffs of smoke and trees resembling green spheres atop sticks. Drawing inspiration from surrealist painter Escher, Callaghan employs elements of symmetry and pattern in his work, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail. For enthusiasts entranced by the mesmerizing charm of realism in surrealism painting, George Callaghan’s portfolio beckons with an immersive voyage into a world of imagination and awe. Delve into his captivating creations, available for sale online, or immerse yourself in the enchantment at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery.
