I wish I could figure out who this super-talented artist of the 1800's "Mort R.", was. He painted this gorgeous swamp scene in 1872, but his signature did not include his last name and so we don't know who he was! At any rate, if you have ever visited Louisiana, or the Carolina coast, or even parts of Texas, you will understand how beautifully the artist has captured the special light coming up over a swamp early in the morning. After late-Expressionist beginnings in the 20s, he created in the early 30s, probably the most-respected part of his work, those strictly built, color-sparing tempera images that are the New Objectivity and the Magic Realism assigned, Barth's paintings of the early 1930s seem to express the loneliness of man in the face of a colder and more threatening social situation. The constructivist rigor of these works is transformed in the American paintings of 1936 into a more painterly style with a richer modeling of the subject matter, without abandoning the theme: the images reflect the loneliness and emptiness of the not only American "way of life" - they became repeatedly compared to works by Edward Hopper. Lundbohm grew up in Fritsla, Sweden where his father was a fisherman. Sixten Lundbohm graduated in Gothenburg in 1913, and studied art history at the University of Gothenburg and at the same time studied at Valand's evening school. In the spring of 1914 he also attended Valand's painting school with Axel Erdmann as a teacher and started the autumn of the same year at Wilhelmson's paint school in Stockholm.
