About the Item

Measures Painting 24.875 x 30 inches Framed 31.75 x 36.375 inches George Thompson Pritchard (1878–1962) was a New Zealand-born artist renowned for his landscape and seascape paintings. Born on April 11, 1878, in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, Pritchard pursued his artistic education at several esteemed institutions, including the University of Auckland's Elam School of Fine Art, the Melbourne Academy of Fine Arts, the South Kensington School of Art in London, the Académie Julian in Paris, and the Van der Veldt Academy in Amsterdam. In 1906, Pritchard migrated to the United States, initially settling in San Francisco, where he produced numerous paintings during his three-year stay. He later lived in Milwaukee before returning to the United Kingdom during World War I, where he contributed to the war effort by working in a munitions factory. Following the war, Pritchard returned to California, establishing a studio in Los Angeles. There, he became an influential art teacher and exhibited regularly with the Glendale and Santa Monica Art Associations. Pritchard's oeuvre primarily consists of seascapes and landscapes, reflecting his diverse experiences across different continents. His works have been featured in various exhibitions and continue to be sought after by collectors. Notably, Havelock North was fortunate to receive a substantial number of Pritchard's paintings, generously gifted by the artist himself. These works are now displayed and preserved at Duart House, serving as a testament to his enduring legacy. Pritchard's artistic journey, marked by extensive travel and study, significantly influenced his style and subject matter, making him a notable figure in the landscape and seascape genres of his time. The painting offered here showcases his talents of design and mood-conveyance, interpreted though the application of lovely soft impressionist colors. It retains its original hand carved wood frame which has been covered in 23k gold.

Moonlight Along the Coast
Located in Spokane, WA
Measures Painting 20 x 25 inches Framed 24 x 39 inches (approximately) This luminist and atmospheric evening seascape by Granville Redmond (1871 - 1935) was painted on Catalina Island off the California coast c.1920. Redmond was a very prominent California Impressionist known for his serene tranquil and mood-filled California coastal paintings bathed in moonlight with waves gently rolling onto the shore. As a deaf mute, he explained that without speech and hearing, his abilities to see things in a detailed and poetic way were much more honed and enhanced. He was renowned for his Impressionist landscapes, particularly those featuring California wildflowers, coastal scenes, and tonal moonlit settings. Despite his deafness from a young age, Redmond achieved significant acclaim for his art and even acted in silent films, becoming friends with Charlie Chaplin, who built an art studio for him on his large movie lot. Redmond lost his hearing due to scarlet fever as a child and later attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, where his artistic talents were nurtured. He studied at the California School of Design in San Francisco before continuing his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian. He became a highly respected landscape painter, shifting between vibrant Impressionist poppy...
