This fine work presented by Darnley Fine Art is a superb example of Rochegrosse artwork. Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse was born to Élise Marie Bourotte (1828-1904) and Jules Jean Baptiste Rochegrosse who died in 1874. In 1875, his mother remarried the poet Théodore de Banville, of whom Georges-Antoine became the adopted son. He frequented the artists and men of letters that his father-in-law received at his home: Paul Verlaine , Stéphane Mallarmé , Arthur Rimbaud , Victor Hugo and Gustave Flaubert .
Rochegrosse studied at the age of 12 in Paris with Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger at the Académie Julian, where he later taught draughtsmanship. His themes are generally historical, and he treated them on a colossal scale and in an emotional naturalistic style, with a distinct revelling in horrible subjects and details
While enjoying the benefits of the more liberal teaching at the Académie Julian, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, and was a finalist in the Prix de Rome competition twice. In 1883 he won the Prix du Salon, which enabled him to visit Italy. He subsequently travelled to Belgium, Holland and Germany. Around 1890 he married his great love Marie Leblond, who became the model for the heroines in his paintings for about 30 years.
From 1900, Rochegrosse and Marie spent the winter months in El-Biar, in the hills above the Bay of Algiers, where the painter often found the Oriental backgrounds for his compositions.

This grand scene depicts the interior of Knole House, a country house and former archbishops palace. Situated within the 1,000 acre Knole Park the house ranks in the top five of England's largest houses occupying a total of four acres.
The majority of the canvas is given to a well furnished drawing room resplendent with various paintings, tapestries and furniture. To this day Knole House has one of the finest collections of 17th century English upholstered furniture in the world. Much of it was made for the royal palaces of the ruling Stuart dynasty and is of the highest quality. It is likely that the chair and footstools seen her originally came to Knole house as part of the vast collection put together by Charles, 6th Earl of Dorset.
This work has incredible intricate detail in all aspects of the space including the depiction of flowers in vases, a bird in a cage and adorned trinkets. On the armchair sits an English guittar, popular in Victorian Britain. The instrument is recognisable for its pear-shaped body, flat base and rather short neck.
A dog stands before an opened door leading further into the house. In the distance we are given just a glimpse of a lady and gentleman conversing at the window. From here a lovely flow of daylight floods into the rest of the scene making the whole work bright and airy. In the foreground on the windowsill is a music book with pages open and an untouched peach. This perhaps signifies the sudden rush of the young woman away from her resting place to meet the unexpected suitor outside.

William Gale exhibited a number of charming genre scene's in the Pre-Raphaelite style, of which the present is an exquisite example.
This work has a strong nautical theme as suggested by the title. Through the small window at the back of this interior room we glimpse the sea, seemingly calm and peaceful. Despite its appearance, the threat of sea is reminded to us with the poster over the bed inscribed with the phrase 'Man Overboard'. This is cleverly echoed by the toy sail boat that lies at an angle, tipped to one side on the bedcovers. As we examine this image of boy and mother one can also identify a picture mounted on the wall of a man in a sailors uniform...
