Gilbert Adams
Constantine Bay Cornwall - Mid 20th Century English Impressionist Beach Painting

c.1960

About the Item

This very beautiful mid 20th century impressionist oil on board by Gilbert Adams depicts Constantine Bay in North Cornwall, known as one of the best surfing spots in the county. The artist has captured the bay on a sunny summers day using a wonderful palette of colours and liberal impasto brushwork. The work is inscribed with title and artist information on the reverse and presented in a fine painted frame, which compliments the work perfectly. A stunning work of art which will not disappoint. Artist: Gilbert Adams (English, 1906-1996) Title: Constantine Bay Medium: Oil on board Size: 27.5 x 31.5 inches (70 x 80 cm) including the frame Gilbert Adams studied at Reading University and like his father and brother, Gilbert earned his reputation as a photographer. Most notably, he obtained a commission by the British Council to make a series promoting Britain to tourists and also directed the lighting for the Coronation of Elizabeth II. A number of Gilbert’s photographic portraits are held by the National Portrait Gallery including ones of the popular British artists Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost and Graham Sutherland. Other famous faces to appear amongst his post-war work include the sculptor Henry Moore and a young Marianne Faithfull. Gilbert was also an incredibly talented painter and relayed his skills as a portrait photographer to his portrait painting - "Art and picture making with a camera are fundamentally the same, requiring such essential qualities as good taste, beauty of line, and perfect juxtaposition of tone, together with atmosphere that stirs the emotion" Gilbert Adams, 'Photograms of the Year’ (1948) p.11. His portraits are executed in an impressionistic and occasionally expressionistic manner. Through the medium of oil and coloured pastel, the portraits in this collection convey a vibrancy and beauty of line reminiscent of the early members of the New English Arts Club. Gilbert was also a prolific landscape painter. He spent a great deal of time in St Ives which he first visited in 1926 to see fellow artist Leonard Richmond (1889 -1965) and later returned regularly on holidays. He moved to St Ives with his family at the beginning of World War One and became close friends with the most major artists working in the area, including Peter Lanyon and Hyman Segal. Gilbert was in great demand as lecturer on art, photography, and lighting for the remainder of his life. He later specialised in photographing the ballet, before passing away in 1996.

A finely painted and atmospheric work which clearly shows the influence of Methuen's one time teacher Walter Sickert. Signed on the reverse and presented in a beautiful gilt frame. Joris, Pio Joris attended the Istituto di Belle Arti in Rome and in 1861 he enrolled at the Accademia di San Luca, where he remained for just a year. On a visit to the 1st Esposizione Nazionale di Belle Arti of Florence in 1861 he was attracted by the naturalistic works from the Naples school. He came into contact with Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi during a trip to Capri, Sorrento and Naples in 1866. In Rome, he kept company with Mariano Fortuny, whose painting, with its pleasant, captivating luministic effects, made a very strong impression on Joris. That was how he developed his own very personal artistic language, which went on to bring him remarkable commercial success on an international scale, helped by his collaboration with Paris art dealer...
