Il genere del vedutismo veneziano si sviluppò ai primordi del Settecento, in concomitanza con la sempre maggior affluenza di quanti, tra eruditi ed artisti stranieri, avessero desiderato portare in patria un ricordo delle meraviglie lagunari. La pionieristica produzione del Canaletto prima e l’affermazione del positivo utilizzo di mezzi scientifici quali la camera ottica produsse una solida affermazione dei panorami veneziani, che iniziarono a spopolare per tutta Italia. Nel XIX secolo diverse correnti artistiche ricalcanti romanticismi, vedutismi e storicismi principiati nel secolo precedente sostennero inoltre il preferenziale ruolo da concedersi ai dipinti di soggetto lagunare.
Il presente offre una romantica veduta del Canal Grande con il Ponte di Rialto, ripreso nella pacatezza di una quieta serata veneziana. L’edificazione del ponte risale, nell’ideazione progettuale, al medioevo: come riportato dal Lorenzetti (Guida di Venezia) sin dal 1172 il doge Sebastiano Ziani prospettò l’idea di unire le due rive opposte del canale tramite un ponte di barche; Nicolò Baratieri esaudì questo desiderio nel 1181, con il cosiddetto ponte Quartarolo, dal nome della moneta che batteva pedaggio, o della moneta, in ragione dalla relativa vicinanza ai locali della Zecca. L’aleatorietà del ponte di barche venne sostituita nel XIII tramite una solida struttura lignea, ricostruita più volte durante i secoli successivi; ne offre meticolosa testimonianza il Miracolo della Croce al Ponte di Rialto di Vittore Carpaccio (Venezia, Gallerie dell’Accademia, 1496 ca.). Il ponte prese successivamente nome dal mercato di Rivoalto che vi si svolgeva. L’impellenza di una continuativa manutenzione dello scheletro ligneo spinse tuttavia il Consiglio a deliberare un bando per la progettazione e la realizzazione di un suo sostituto in pietra: alla gara, bandita nel 1554, presero parte Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, Palladio e il Sansovino. Si dispose la realizzazione del progetto del veneziano Antonio da Ponte: la costruzione, iniziata nel 1588, si concluse nel 1592.
Giovanni Bonomi, artista del presente dipinto, si dedicò principalmente alla pittura di genere ed al più coloristicamente vivo vedutismo veneziano, come accade nel presente. Oriundo della città lagunare, Bonomi incontrò il favore nazionale esponendo a Roma nel 1883 con Costumi del 1700; l’esperienza espositiva si reiterò quindi nel 1887 alla mostra nazionale veneziana con Abbazia, Cattiverie di guerra e San Marco.
