Signed lower left, 'Glen Chesnut' (American, 1930-2017) and dated 1991.
Born in Amarillo, Texas, Glen Chesnut was the youngest of six children. In 1935, the Chesnut family moved to Marysville, California. As a young man, Chesnut worked as a cowboy in Tehachapi, California before attending Fresno State University where he received his B.A. in 1954. After graduating, he was drafted into the army and, upon his return from his station in Germany in 1957, became a merchant seaman. In between spending half of the year at sea, he worked as a writer in San Francisco's North Beach and began his painting career. Chesnut met his wife in 1970 and continued shipping out as a seaman. In 1982, he left the merchant marine in order to devote himself full-time fully to his career as a fine artist. Chesnut exhibited with success including with Artists’ Society International. In 1987, he was awarded the ASI's Art Achievement Award.

(Qinglongzhen [now Qingpu, Songjiang, Shanghai Municipality], b.1255; d. 1328).
Chinese painter. Under the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) he became an official, rising to the level of Vice-President of the River Conservation Bureau. He was famous for his paintings of horses, which were much admired by both his Mongol and Chinese patrons. In horse painting he followed in the tradition of the Song-period (960–1279) artist Li Gonglin, which was characterized by use of the ‘iron-wire’ line and a minimum of shading. Ultimately, however, Ren’s style can be traced to the Tang (ad 618–907) painters Yan Liben and Han Gan.
Ren’s earliest surviving painting is dated 1280, indicating that he was a mature artist by his mid-twenties. Although he worked as an official under the alien Mongol emperors, he was capable of paintings that incorporated clear political messages. The most famous is Fat and Lean Horses (Beijing, Pal. Born in Los Angeles, Leon D'Usseau began training under the guidance of his father, who was among the earliest fine-art film directors to work in Hollywood. At the age of twelve, Leon was drawing seriously and, at fifteen, received a working scholarship at Chouinard School of Art where he studied under Merrill Gage and Alexander Archipenko. At this early age, he was also employed by Chouinard to teach a line-drawing class.
