About the Item
Working with oil paint on canvas of all different shapes and sizes, Glynne James is inspired by the Lincolnshire fenland that he has come to call home. His unique style is comprised of multiple squares and rectangles, each acting as a ‘window’ to the scene, as viewed throughout time. In this regards, Glynne’s work might document the arrival of flowers in Spring, the light of a mid-summer sky, and the haze of an autumnal sunrise, all in one cohesive painting.
Whether muted and subtle, or brazen and bold, Glynne’s use of colour always creates a rich, familiar atmosphere that perfectly captures the ever changing essence of the Great British Countryside. In this regard, it is fitting that Glynne’s work does not shy away from the man-made. Power stations, wind turbines and pylons are often featured adorning the landscape in such a way, that industrialisation appears almost unremarkable. This harmonious proximity between rural and industrial, invites the viewer to consider the evolution of the natural world, as humankind continues to push it’s boundaries.

Glynne James
Glynne James was born and raised in Hertfordshire — one of the “home counties” that borders greater London. He began painting and exhibiting locally before eventually moving to Boston, England, where he found himself deeply inspired by the flat stretches of marshy land that allow for grand views of the horizon, sun rises, sunsets and great swathes of ever-changing sky. Commonly found in the east of England, this landscape is known as the Fenlands, and is iconic of James’s work.
In its use of oil on canvas, James's work is a sympathetic fusion of traditional methods with a contemporary twist. The unique stylization of his creations makes a compelling nod to the idea that each piece has been composed over time. Through a series of tessellating squares, the different hues of days, and perhaps even seasons, can clearly be seen. Not only does this lend itself to the undulating rhythms of the natural world, it allows the viewer to appreciate the richness and complexity of color, light and tone.
