Matt Higgins
Red Dusk, Contemporary Landscape Painting

2022

About the Item

This series of paintings repeats the sun / moon as the main focal point for each composition. From an anthropological context, humans have always looked towards the sun, moon and the horizon line as points of reference, location and guidance. The sun has always been here even though the landscape changes, people and animals come and go and the world continues to evolve. Each painting in this series begins with the circle in the upper center third of the canvas in a different color. The color surrounding the circle changes with each painting as well as the parts of the landscape. These changes grounded by the constancy of the circle make each composition similar but unique at the same time. The resulting image is a minimalist landscape that is left open to interpretation about the time and place of the scene.
