Gozo
Framed Surrealist Dreamscape Painting on Paper Inspired. Walking Head with Cat

2024

About the Item

This original surrealist painting by Gozo presents a solitary figure with a sculptural head and slender legs walking along a stark pier, accompanied by a black dog. A yellow monumental arch stands in the background, evoking metaphysical landscapes and distant journeys. The composition unfolds across a gradient blue seascape, conjuring themes of isolation, absurdity, and existential drift with Gozo’s characteristic humor and minimal symbolism. In a recent revision, the artist has incorporated a bespoke wooden frame, carefully painted and conceived as an integral part of the artwork. This added element expands the narrative by reinforcing the pictorial atmosphere and creating a coherent, unified visual language. The frame is not just a display accessory—it functions as a sculptural extension of the piece itself, blurring the boundary between artwork and object. Maintaining its original price, this update enhances the artwork’s presence and conceptual coherence without additional cost. The painting belongs to Gozo's broader exploration of post-human, playful melancholy, and the intimate coexistence between animals, monuments, and ambiguous protagonists. The composition captures the metaphysical atmosphere characteristic of de Chirico’s work, with elongated shadows and symbolic elements that evoke themes of solitude, introspection, and the surreal journey. The playful yet contemplative nature of the piece blurs the line between reality and abstraction, inviting the viewer into its poetic dimension. Medium: Acrylic on Fabriano paper. Dimensions: Height: 70 cm (27.56 in), Width: 50 cm (19.69 in), Depth: 1 mm (0.04 in). Condition: Excellent, new, and ready for display. Period: Contemporary (2010–). Created by Gozo Collective, a community of artists based on the Galician Atlantic Coast of Spain, this work reflects their collaborative ethos. Their creative process emphasizes poetic expression, playful exploration, and the transformation of individual ideas into a unified vision. Each piece celebrates the beauty of the surreal, offering unique perspectives designed to inspire contemplation and bring a sense of wonder to interior spaces.

1970's Mod Surrealist Day Glo Fluorescent Acrylic Painting J. James Akston
Located in Surfside, FL
J. James Akston Surrealism, Village scene (Mexico) Acrylic on Board Frame: 15 X 18 Image: 9 X 12 Joseph James Akston was a Polish American sculptor, painter, known for surrealist abstract painting and Aubusson (for Les Ateliers Pinton Frères, tapisserie, Aubusson) tapestry artist. Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1898 he died in Palm Beach Florida in 1983. During the 1960s and '70s the entrepreneur-artist James Joseph Akston adopted a unique Surreal Expressionist style in order to present his private primordial universe and lampoon its denizens, a ribald cast of animal creatures with human foibles. A successful industrialist, he began his career with General Motors foreign operations and then started his own business. Intermittently he studied painting, first with Jerry Farnsworth in North Truro (Mass.) and then with Jose Clemente Orozco in Mexico. In the early 1960s Akston became publisher-editor of a group of art publications which included The Magazine Arts. Initially an abstract expressionist, Akston had one-man exhibitions at the New York Convention Center and the Corcoran Museum in Washington. Since 2015 the record price for this artist at auction is $12,575 USD for Spheres Aux Triangles Aubusson Tapestry, sold at Bonhams New York in 2019. He was a Graduate of Georgetown University.
