Grégoire Mathias
"Gap of Dunloe, Evening" Acrylic on Canvas Cubist Landscape Painting of Ireland

About the Item

A perspective of the Gap of Dunloe in the evening light, this painting full of greens represents a highlight of Ireland's beautiful outdoors landscapes. It is the first of a series of 3 paintings representing the Gap of Dunloe at different times of the day. Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass running North-South in county Kerry, Ireland and one of Ireland's most beautiful scenic destinations. Nature and its changing light transforming the scenery at different times of the day is the theme of this series. The series was exhibited alongside other Irish, Italian and French inspired work (featuring landscapes, still lifes, Muses of the Arts and portraits) during the artist's première exhibition in Ireland that took place in May 2024 in Dublin. This first Irish exhibition that happened to overlap with the Bloomsday Festival that celebrates James Joyce every year, gave the opportunity to make a donation to the Dublin James Joyce Museum, therefore "James Joyce, Portrait aux Horloges" is now permanently exhibited there. More of Grégoire Mathias' work is still currently showcased in Ireland, some at the well known Gorry Gallery, others still at Howbert & Mays Fine Arts boutique, which had hosted the exhibition. Grégoire Mathias had developed a strong connection with Celtic culture when he lived in Brittany from 1997 to 2005. These influences were awoken again in his work in 2022 when his daughter’s move to Dublin gave him multiple opportunities to visit and paint Ireland. For the artist, the fast changing light associated with the Irish weather has been an endless source of inspiration for his continuous exploration of Diachronic Cubism, and Ireland in his eyes symbolises the union of Earth and Sky. About the Artist: Grégoire Mathias, a graduate of the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (ENSBA - École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts), is exhibiting his work at Sotheby's gallery in Périgueux, as well as in numerous galleries across Paris, New York, and Dublin. Mathias is the creator of diachronic cubism, an unexplored branch of cubism that depicts landscapes, interiors, everyday life scenes, and, most notably, the concept of time itself. This unique style is characterized by the deconstruction of subjects and light over specific periods of time. Since 2020, he has been designing UN posters through the World Federation for the United Nations Associations (WFUNA), becoming the first French artist to contribute to the organization after Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and Vasarely.

"Paysage de la Côte d'Azur" by G. Mathias – Cubist Oil and Acrylic Painting
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
Paysage de la Cote d'Azur 65 x 54 cm Oil and Acrylic on Canvas Paysage de la Côte d'Azur is a vibrant tribute to the sunny allure of the French Riviera, interpreted through Diachronic Cubism. This piece captures the energy of the Côte d'Azur with its fragmented yet harmonious composition. Rich yellows, deep blues, and bright reds evoke the Mediterranean sun, sea, and architecture, while angular shapes and layered perspectives bring movement and depth. A small figure and sailboats add a narrative touch, inviting the viewer to explore the scene from multiple viewpoints. Mathias masterfully merges cubist abstraction with a lively depiction of this iconic region. Perfect For: Collectors of Mediterranean landscapes, amateurs of cubist art, and those drawn to the vibrant charm of the Côte d'Azur. Paysage de la Côte d'Azur is an exquisite addition to any collection, infusing any space with color and modernity.
