About the Item

Sandycove I Acrylic on Canvas 46 x 38cm A fresh modern cubist view of the Irish seaside town of Sandycove, blending sharp geometry with soft Atlantic tones. This acrylic on canvas (46 x 38 cm) offers a stylised view of the seaside village of Sandycove, adjacent to the well-known swimming "Forty Foot" landmark, just south of Dublin, a location also famously linked to James Joyce and known for its literary and maritime heritage. In Sandycove I, Greg Mathias captures the iconic Irish coastline in a distinctive cubisme analytique approach, diverging from his signature diachronic cubism. Here, the seaside architecture and natural shoreline are distilled into intersecting lines, angular forms, and flattened perspective. The palette is light and open: airy blues, crisp greens, and luminous whites, offering a sense of breezy clarity that evokes summer along the Irish coast. The two seated figures near the water’s edge bring a human touch to this almost dreamlike composition. Painted during one of many Mathias’s trips to Ireland, visiting his daughter who was studying in Blackrock, close to Sandycone, this work was part of a special exhibition showcasing his impressions of Ireland. Here, instead of layering different moments in time, as he typically does, Mathias opts for a single contemplative moment—rendered with the analytical precision and fragmented geometry characteristic of early 20th-century Cubism. This work was included in Mathias’s Irish series exhibited in 2024, which explored iconic locations in Ireland through the lens of Cubism. Perfect For: Collectors of Irish art and modern cubism, or buyers seeking fresh, contemporary coastal landscapes. Well-suited for beach houses, summer homes, or Dublin-inspired interiors. Also ideal for those furnishing countryside or seaside secondary residences with distinctive French contemporary art. Keywords: Greg Mathias, Diachronic Cubism, Irish coastal art, Sandycove painting, Irish modernism, Dublin art, contemporary Irish landscape, abstract village scene, cubist seascape, Irish series, Irish exhibition 2024, coastal homes decor, French artist, seaside painting. About the artist: Grégoire Mathias, graduate of ENSBA Paris, is a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism, an evolution of Cubism that captures movement and time within a single frame. His works have been exhibited at Sotheby’s Périgueux, and galleries in Paris, New York, and Dublin. Since 2020, Mathias has designed posters for the United Nations (WFUNA), making him the first French artist to do so since Picasso, Chagall, and Miró. "Paysage de la Côte d'Azur" by G. Mathias – Cubist Oil and Acrylic Painting
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
Paysage de la Cote d'Azur 65 x 54 cm Oil and Acrylic on Canvas Paysage de la Côte d'Azur is a vibrant tribute to the sunny allure of the French Riviera, interpreted through Diachronic Cubism. This piece captures the energy of the Côte d'Azur with its fragmented yet harmonious composition. A small figure and sailboats add a narrative touch, inviting the viewer to explore the scene from multiple viewpoints. Mathias masterfully merges cubist abstraction with a lively depiction of this iconic region. Perfect For: Collectors of Mediterranean landscapes, amateurs of cubist art, and those drawn to the vibrant charm of the Côte d'Azur. John Hatch American Cubist Landscape Oil Painting Massachusetts Seascape 1952
By John W. Hatch
Located in Buffalo, NY
An original oil on board painting by American modernist John W. Hatch. This incredible cubist landscape was created in 1952. Estate stamped and dated on the reverse. Titled, "Nahant Rocks, Lynn, MA " with a partial exhibition label on the reverse. The painting comes housed in a black wood frame presentation. John Woodsum Hatch 1919-1998 During his fifty-year career as an artist, John Woodsum Hatch explored the people, the landscape, and the seascape around him. From his extensive travels to his years in New Hampshire, he developed a body of work that captures a sense of place. Through watercolor, ink and sand, he depicted the grandeur of the White Mountains. The crisp light and distinct topography of the Isles of Shoals and Great Bay Estuary are precisely and clearly documented in acrylic and tempera paintings. His ability to convey the sheer scale and longevity of the mountains and sea, and by comparison the fleeting nature of human life, conveys in a not-so-subtle way that the natural environment is to be revered and preserved. Hatch took his first teaching job at the University of New Hampshire in 1949, the same year he graduated from Yale University. He never left. A former student, Sam Cady, described his contributions: “He was a wonderful mix of jokester and sage. A teacher who obviously loved people, loved teaching, and had a great gift for it.” After retiring in 1985, he was made an honorary Professor Emeritus at UNH. Hatch contributed to New Hampshire's cultural life in three areas: his teaching, his art, and his community service. His effectiveness in these three areas can be traced his commitment to give something of himself to help others. Many artists teach by necessity and resent it as a drain on their creative energies but Hatch found his greatest fulfillment from a combination of teaching, making art, and being deeply involved with his community as an art historian and as an environmentalist. Hatch’s work can be seen in numerous public collections, including: the Addison Gallery of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. John Woodsum Hatch, New Hampshire's 1997 Living Treasure Award recipient, died on August 6, 1998, at the age of 78. Hatch was a draftsman, an artist and a muralist. His works can be found in public and private collections throughout the region. He exhibited at the New Hampshire Art...
