The night sky over the densely treed forest of Hennen's Wyatt Mountain, Virginia home is the subject of this rich, highly detailed contemporary landscape painting in oil on panel set in May. A verdant grove of trees in shades of green are illuminated by the glowing crescent moon and delicate stars in the dark blue evening sky.
This square painting is framed in a natural wood float frame. 12 x 12 inches (unframed), 12.75 x 12.75 inches (framed). Signed, dated and titled on verso.
Gregory Hennen paints the mountains and valleys of the dramatic landscape of his Virginia home. A naturalist as well as a life-long painter, Hennen has a close relationship with his environment. On his daily walks he fills sketchbooks chronicling the land, the effect of passing light and the seasonal changes. By building up tens of thousands of small brushstrokes, Hennen’s paintings are a complex collection of small marks gathered and made solid. The landscape paintings are at once astoundingly complex and perfectly calm. Hennen makes what can be described as ego-less paintings, perfectly crafted and stunningly beautiful; his paintings are a joy to take in.

Gregory Hennen
Gregory Hennen, b. 1962 Hennen’s work is inspired by his extensive time spent in nature where he makes detailed field drawings and watercolors in preparation for complex oil paintings created in the studio. His meticulous paintings are influenced by sources as wide-ranging as The Hudson River School painters, Japanese wood block prints and Gustav Klimt. Gregory Hennen earned his BFA, Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic, CT and attended the graduate program at the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. His work is in the public collections of Pfizer Inc., Greenwich Public Library, Greenwich, CT and in numerous private collections. The artist has been represented by Kenise Barnes Fine Art, Kent, CT since 2002. He lives and works in Virginia.
