Gregory Hennen
Ridge View Wyatt Mt, Blue Sky, Clouds, Trees, Virginia Mountains

2013

About the Item

The densely treed forest and mountain ledges of Hennen's Virginia home are the subject for this rich, highly detailed landscape painting. Recording the changing light from the mountain ridge, Hennen captures its many shades of green, blue and gold. Framed in a light natural wood float frame. Signed, dated and titled on verso. Although the artist names his paintings after places, his complex compositions are usually composites of several location sketches and visual memory, not exact reproductions of a specific place. A naturalist as well as a life-long painter, Hennen has a close relationship with his environment. On his daily walks he fills sketchbooks chronicling the land, the effect of passing light and the seasonal changes. From these many field sketches, a final sketch is used as a guide for rendering a drawing with graphite onto the 3/4 inch wood panel for a painting. By building up tens of thousands of small brushstrokes, Hennen’s paintings are a complex collection of small marks gathered and made solid. The landscape paintings are at once astoundingly complex and perfectly calm. Hennen makes what can be described as ego-less paintings, perfectly crafted and stunningly beautiful; his paintings are a joy to experience.

My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry. There is nothing “new...
