About the Item

Gustave de Breanski, brother of artist Alfred de Breanski, is renowned for his oil paintings on canvas of 19th century British maritime scenes with choppy waters, moody skies, boats and harbors. 'Coming into Harbour' shows all three of his best technical skills. The churned waters by the pier contrast with the white cliffs behind the pier. The boat's red sail and the red flag on the mast over the pier provide color and drama to the scene. In the distance are calmer, bluer waters and the distant outlines of sailboats out at sea. There is clouded white light in the center of the skies, and on the white crests of water between the sailboat and pier, drawing focus to the center of the painting. Presented in its likely original gilt frame, in very good overall condition. The back of the frame shows appropriate age and the signature (lower left) is large and visible, and as it should be. This work is a good size, 38" by 29" overall and 29" by 19" canvas sight. There are numerous specks of color; brown, tan, grey, that could be intentional in the mixed overcast skies, when viewed hung on the wall. The painting is overall presented in clean condition, suggesting the marks and smudges intensify the sky. Stretcher marks are visible on close inspection, and less so when hung and viewed as it should be. Beautiful frame, likely re-gilded in the past, is in very good condition, with slight wear consistent with age. Ready to hang!
