About the Item

Garden in antique Roman Style, Monceau Park (Parc Monceau), Paris. The scene depicts a romantic garden motif within Parc Monceau in Paris. At the center of the composition lies a tranquil pond encircled by classical columns with capitals and a decorative superstructure, evoking the atmosphere of an ancient Roman ruin. Surrounding trees and lush greenery frame the view, adding depth and softness to the architecture. The work is signed “Harald Pryn Paris 25” and executed in oil on canvas. Harald Pryn (1891–1968) was a Danish painter and graphic artist, known above all for his landscapes. Born in Frederiksberg, near Copenhagen, Pryn grew up in a horticultural family; his father was a gardener, which may have nurtured his sensitivity to natural motifs. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Pryn was largely self-taught, yet he developed a distinctive style marked by clarity of perspective and an instinctive use of light. His paintings reveal a strong attachment to the Danish landscape, particularly woodland paths, snowy roads, and seasonal shifts. Many of his works are characterized by long avenues or tracks that draw the viewer’s eye into the scene, creating both structure and atmosphere. While he became especially well known for his winter landscapes—bright, crisp depictions of snow-covered forests—he also painted spring and summer scenes with equal sensitivity. Though he spent most of his life in Denmark, Pryn also traveled, and his stay in Paris during the 1920s inspired a number of works, including views of Parc Monceau such as the present painting. His ability to combine architectural motifs with lush greenery demonstrates both his versatility and his eye for harmony between nature and built forms. Pryn’s art was widely exhibited during his lifetime, and he participated in group shows in Denmark and abroad. His works are today represented in several public collections, including Rudersdal Museer (Museum Rudersdal). His paintings remain admired for their quiet lyricism and their careful observation of light and season. Monceau Park or Parc Monceau in French, situated in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, is one of the city’s most elegant public gardens. Originally created in the late 18th century by Philippe d’Orléans, Duke of Chartres, it was conceived as a “fantasy garden” with architectural follies designed by Louis Carrogis Carmontelle. Among these was the Roman-style colonnade around a pond, which survives today and features in Pryn’s painting. Later redesigned in the 19th century by the landscape architect Adolphe Alphand during Baron Haussmann’s transformation of Paris, the park became a public space in 1861. Over time it has inspired numerous artists, including Claude Monet and Gustave Caillebotte, and it remains celebrated for its blend of natural beauty and romantic architectural features.

Italian Landscape, Ariccia and The Alban Mountains
Located in Stockholm, SE
View of the Ariccia Bridge and the Alban Hills This finely executed plein air landscape depicts the monumental bridge of Ariccia and the town with the surrounding Alban Hills, painted by German landscape artist Joachim Ludwig Heinrich Daniel Bünsow (born 1821 in Kiel, died 1910 in the same city). Executed in oil on paper mounted on cardboard, the work dates from his Italian period between 1853 and 1858. Not signed. Bünsow received his artistic training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1839 to 1848, studying under Johann Ludwig Lund and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. In 1844, the Copenhagen Art Association acquired his painting "Tellingstedt in Dithmarschen." Following his studies, he traveled to Dresden, where he became associated with the circle around Johan Christian Dahl. A scholarship from the Copenhagen Academy enabled Bünsow to reside in Rome from 1853 to 1858. During this period, his landscapes evolved from the finely toned, naturalistic style of his early work to more atmospheric and idealized compositions, influenced by Louis Gurlitt. Bünsow's early works from his time in Copenhagen are characterized by fine tonality and naturalistic rendering, reflecting the style of his teacher Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. His Italian landscapes, however, exhibit a more atmospheric and idealized approach, influenced by Louis Gurlitt. Notably, Bünsow produced high-quality drawings during his time in Rome, some of which are preserved in the Kunsthalle zu Kiel. Historical Context: The Ariccia Bridge In the early 19th century, the local authorities sought to improve the Appian Way's safety and accessibility. The solution involved constructing bridges to span the Ariccia valley and adjacent ravines. In 1843, Pope Gregory XVI commissioned a six-arched bridge to address the elevation differences. Following his death in 1846, Pope Pius IX continued the project, entrusting architect Ireneo Aleandri with the design and Giuseppe Bertolini with the execution. Completed in 1854, the bridge stands as a significant 19th-century engineering achievement. Featuring three tiers of elegant neoclassical arches inspired by Roman art, it measures 59 meters in height and 312 meters in length. Travertine columns at both ends commemorate the Roman milestones...
