Die Landschaftsbilder von Heinrich Krause zeigen neben Einflüssen des französischen Impressionismus und dessen Rezeption in Österreich vor allem eine klare Prägung durch Cezanne. Seine vibrierenden Farbflächen sind Ausgangspunkt für die Entwicklung eines unverkennbar eigenen Stils. Mit oft nur zwei Hauptfarben und einem strengen kompositorischen Aufbau entstehen meist menschenleere, formal stark zurückgenommene Landschaften, die eine stolze Erhabenheit ausstrahlen.
Porträts haben im Schaffen von Heinrich Krause einen hohen Stellenwert. Es gelingt ihm, in unaufdringlichen Darstellungen eindringliche Charaktere festzuhalten. Es ist immer wesentlich mehr als ein Moment, der konserviert wird: Die Dargestellten sichern sich ihre eigene Welt im Bild durch verschlossene Gestik oder abschweifenden Blick und öffnen sich erst bei näherer Betrachtung. Der Maler spart seine eigenen Augen in den Bildnissen aus und dennoch ist es nicht notwendigerweise ein leerer Blick, auf die der Betrachter stößt, sondern eine direkte, emotionale Vereinnahmung.
