About the Item

'Sandaig' is a contemporary landscape by Helen M. Turner, of the bright and peaceful coast of Sandaig Bay in western Scotland. Western Scotland with white sandy beaches has been a favorite artist location for centuries. Remote, with pure light, the western coast line is bounded by lochs and sea, hills and beaches. While evidence of civilisation may be found in the houses tucked into the painting’s background, a flock of seagulls appear to be the only creatures present on the beach. A rock formation occupies the painting’s foreground and a pool of water cuts through the expansive white sands. Distant hills are blue as the sea and sky with rocks in shades of mauve in the foreground. This painting is framed under glass, and is signed by the artist in the lower left corner. Helen M. Turner (b. 1937- d. 2023) was born in Prestwoch, Ayrshire and studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1952-60. While attending the Glasgow School of Art, Turner studied under Trevor Makinson and William Gallager, and worked part-time for James Templeton, a Scottish designer and carpet manufacturer. Before beginning her full time career as an artist, Turner was a successful designer, producing designs for notable institutions such as the San Francisco Opera House, the Waldorf Astoria in New York, and the Turner Hotel in Scotland. As a contemporary colorist, Turner frequently painted coastal scenes and still life’s. Her works reflect a concern with the atmosphere of Scotland’s coastal regions and her use of light and shadow to define various elements within the landscape. In 2000 Turner was awarded the Paisley Art Institute Diploma and was a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Glasgow Society of Women Artists, and the Ayr Sketch Club among other local art organisations. Before she passed in 2023, Turner’s work was exhibited at Red Rag Art Gallery, Thompson’s Gallery, and Brian Sinfield Gallery.
