About the Item

This painting presents a winter twilight in Värmland: snow-capped mountains rise in the distance while a foaming rapid cuts through a dense spruce forest. Signed “H. Hertzhoff,” the picture is executed in a distinctly pointillist manner—short, stippled touches that knit together cool violets, greens, steely blues, and icy whites into a vibrating surface. The subdued dusk light and the glittering water lend the scene both stillness and urgency. Although undated, the handling and palette are consistent with work Hertzhoff produced in the late 1930s to around 1940. Biography Helmer Sigurd Fritiof Hertzhoff—born Boding in 1873 was a Swedish painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. He largely taught himself, supplementing his training with private study, and adopted the surname Hertzhoff when he embarked on his artistic career. He died in 1958. Hertzhoff is best known for landscapes from northern Sweden—mountain vistas, wintry forests, and the aurora borealis—though he also produced occasional city views, portraits, still lifes, drawings, and graphic work. His landscapes often show a heightened chromatic sensibility and a clear, crisp light that suits snow scenes and night skies. A recent academic study even cites the artist Ingrid Ruin, who praised “Helmer Herzhoff” as the most “typically Norrlandic” among painters of the North—underscoring his reputation within that tradition. Exhibitions Hertzhoff exhibited widely across several decades. Solo shows include Hallins Konsthandel in Stockholm (1909, 1911), Valand in Gothenburg (1911), and “Lilla utställningen” in Stockholm (1931). Group appearances range from the Konstnärsförbundet exhibition in Berlin (1910) to Värmlands nation in Uppsala (1950). These dates trace a career that bridged late Romantic naturalism and Nordic modern currents. Museum Representation Hertzhoff is represented in several Swedish institutions: Nationalmuseum, Stockholm Thielska Galleriet, Stockholm Göteborgs konstmuseum (Gothenburgs Artmuseum) Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, Stockholm. The Värmland subject here aligns with Hertzhoff’s broader landscape practice, yet the pointillist facture—tightly packed touches building form and atmosphere—adds a modern, optical shimmer to the winter light. The combination of northern motif, meticulous surface, and twilight tonalities is characteristic of his works.
