Henri Alexis Schaeffer
"Place de la Concorde" Post-Impressionist Parisian Street Scene Oil on Canvas

1953

About the Item

Beautiful oil on canvas painting by the French artist, Henri Alexis Schaeffer. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Here you see figures walking along the street and sidewalk with cars by Place de la Concorde at midday. The water from the fountains flicker and reflect on the surroundings, and magic is being felt. The details are magnificent as Schaeffer captures the architecture of Paris so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. This piece is signed by the artist lower right and it comes housed in a gold tone Mid-Century wood frame with hanging wire ready on verso to be displayed. Art measures 13 x 16 inches Frame measures 16 x 20 inches Henri Alexis Schaeffer was born in Paris, France in 1900. He studied at the famous Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under the great master Cormon. Schaeffer’s earlier paintings consisted primarily of architectural studies of classical monuments and religious landmarks. He was a member of and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1934. Schaeffer mainly painted urban Parisien scenes. Schaeffer was a Post-Impressionist, the art movement following Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism. The style showed a greater concern for expression, structure, and form than did Impressionism. While the use of light is still important, it is strong and focused, as opposed to soft and diffused and the use of color is also strong and pure. Henri Alexis Schaeffer remained in Paris throughout his life and died there in 1975. The artist was a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1934. PROVENANCE: Private collection Connecticut; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

"Marina in the French Riviera" Post-Impressionist Sea Shore Boats Oil Painting
By Lucien Adrion
Located in New York, NY
This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 19 x 23.5 inches Frame measures 27 x 32 inches Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...

The Tree by the Lake, Värmland, By Racken Group Artist Ture Ander
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting by Ture Ander, created in 1917, depicts a serene landscape from Värmland, Sweden. At the center of the composition is a large tree, likely a deciduous species, as suggested by the hints of autumn seen in both the tree and the meadow below it. The short brushstrokes used to depict the leaves and grass evoke a sense of movement and texture, typical of the early 20th-century artistic style. Another beautiful detail is the bluish-tinted forested mountains in the background, creating a sense of depth and tranquility. Ture Ander played a significant role in the Racken group (Rackstadkolonin), an important artistic collective in Sweden at the time. Ander was born on September 17 in Askers socken, Örebro. At the age of 13, he became an apprentice painter in Stockholm, attending evening classes at the Technical School (now known as Konstfack) while working during the day. He earned his journeyman’s certificate in 1902, and the following year, he graduated from the Technical School with the highest honors in painting. In 1905, he was accepted into the Konstnärsförbundets skola (School of the Artists' Association), where he studied alongside notable artists like Leander Engström, Isaac Grünewald, and Einar Nerman...
