Fauvist Painting View of Trees in Valley Landscape, Circle of Henri Edmond Cross

1900s

About the Item

Early 20th Century Fauvist painting probably of the South of France. The painting is unsigned but clearly influenced by the works of Henri Edmond Cross, Paul Seurat and his contemporaries and is of very fine quality. Presented in a patinated wood frame with framers label from Paris. Provenance: Private French collection, South of France then by descent. This artwork presents a dynamic and vivid landscape, capturing a rugged canyon scene painted in rich earthy tones. The artist has used a characteristic rose pink for the terrain reminiscent of the colour choices of Henri Edmond Cross and Signac. The artist employs a unique textural technique to bring depth and life to the jagged cliffs and rocky terrain. Varying shades of red, orange, and brown dominate the canvas, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The intricate detailing of the rock formations suggests a profound understanding of geological structures, while the subtle variations in hue add complexity and depth. The distant cliffs, painted with softer lines, provide a sense of vastness and scale, enhancing the composition's dramatic impact. A weathered frame complements the artwork, tying the piece together while emphasizing its rustic and natural charm. This painting is a testament to the artist's ability to merge colour and texture, creating an immersive and compelling depiction of nature's raw beauty. Henri Edmond Cross: Having rapidly abandoned academic life he associated himself in 1884 with Seurat, Signac and the group of future neo-impressionists. In 1891, at the time of Seurat’s death, he adopted the divisionist technique, a variant of pointillism characterized by longer and more fluctuating brushstrokes. He moved permanently to the Var region, close to Lavandou and indulged his taste for the outdoors, his love of light colours and the division of tones. Over time, he distanced himself more and more from reality. He imagined mythical landscapes, heathen festivals, undulations of light, pure streams crushed by the sun, a sort of paradise, suggesting the search for eternal happiness. The subject became a pretext for pure harmonies of lines and colours. A bold user of colour, Henri-Edmond Cross did not hesitate to radically change colours according to his imagination. Torn between the desire to imitate nature and the will to exceed it, Henri-Edmond Cross pushed chromatic wealth to its paroxysm and influenced Matisse in 1904 during his stay in the south in his work towards Fauvism. Paul Victor Jules Signac (11 November 1863 – 15 August 1935) was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who, with Georges Seurat, helped develop the artistic technique Pointillism. Paul-Victor-Jules Signac was born in Paris on 11 November 1863. His parents wanted him to study architecture but, as he said, his preference was to draw the Seine. He was particularly affected by an 1880 exhibition of Claude Monet's work. Signac began boating. In 1884 he met Claude Monet and Georges Seurat. He was struck by the systematic working methods of Seurat and by his theory of colours and he became Seurat's faithful supporter, friend, and heir with his description of Neo-Impressionism and Divisionism method. Under Seurat's influence he abandoned the short brushstrokes of Impressionism to experiment with scientifically-juxtaposed small dots of pure colour, intended to combine and blend not on the canvas, but in the viewer's eye, the defining feature of Pointillism. The Mediterranean coast is a major theme across Signac's paintings. He left the capital each summer, to stay in the south of France in the village of Collioure or at St. Tropez, where he bought a house and invited his friends. He envisioned the South of France as the perfect location for a future anarchist utopia.

It is certainly a historical landmark of Paris and well known to so many visitors of this beautiful city. Génin painted Paris and Parisians and this is another one of his charming works among many held by this gallery. Please feel free to peruse them all on this platform. In good overall condition. Newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: After the devastation of the First World War, Lucien Génin (1894 - 1953) left his provincial home in the autumn of 1919 to find his fortune among the lively Parisians in the heart of Montmartre.
