About the Artist
Henry John Yeend King was an influential Victorian artist celebrated for his rustic genre scenes and bucolic landscapes. Trained in London and Paris under notable artists such as Léon Bonnat and Fernand Cormon, Yeend King combined the meticulous modeling of figures with the plein air techniques popularized by French Realists and Impressionists.
Although he lived in London, his inspiration often came from the countryside, where he portrayed tranquil rural life with a focus on women at work or rest in picturesque settings. A frequent exhibitor at prestigious venues, including the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolor (where he served as vice-president), Yeend King's works have earned places in major collections, such as the Tate Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
This painting embodies Yeend King's ability to evoke the gentle beauty of nature and the simple pleasures of life in the countryside—a testament to his enduring legacy as a master of Victorian pastoral art.

Henry John Yeend King
Henry John Yeend King was a landscape and rustic genre painter. He began his artistic career by working for three years in glass-works. King went on to study painting under William Bromley in London and also with Bonnat and Cormon in Paris. King exhibited from 1874–24 at the Royal Academy and the New Watercolour Society. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1879, the Royal Institute in 1886, later becoming Vice President. King was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. In 1898, his picture Milking Time was purchased by the Tate Gallery in London. King was a fine late-Victorian oil painter of rustic genre, but his robust plein air technique and use of bold colors reflect his Paris training. His works can be found in The Tate Gallery, London and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, as well as galleries in Reading, Rochdale and Sheffield.
