About the Item

In the 1880’s Smith made a trip to Italy, which added a whole new dimension to his work. His tight style was highly suited to the depiction of the majestic architecture and complex compositions the cities presented. These views are superbly executed and even more interesting than many of his American landscapes which are a bit reserved in comparison. This painting has been well preserved and has a magnificent hand carved 22 karat leafed frame on it styled after an Empire period motif. The painting has a clarity and freshness of color that is great or any interior and does not require extra lighting to look good. Venetian Scene is a lovely and ambitious composition. This piece is comparable to the coveted views of the canals by Reyna and Ortega. What is important to note, is that few American artists made a trip like this - tackling this subject matter in the 1880’s. While views of Venice were popular amongst European artists, Smith’s canvases from this series stand as the few from visiting American artists. The other artist who did similar work was Warren Sheppard – which distinguishes these two Americans as masters of the landscape Provenance: Private Collection, Greenwich, CT since early 1990's Signed: Henry P Smith lower left Oil on Canvas.

"Venice, 1906, " Italy, Warren W. Sheppard, Realist, Oil, Gondola, Canal
By Warren W. Sheppard
Located in Wiscasset, ME
Marine painter Warren W. Sheppard was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, to a ship captain father who instilled in his son a love and respect for the sea. He studied privately with Mauritz F. H. De Haas and took courses in drawing at Cooper Union in New York City. He traveled along the Mediterranean coast in 1879, sketching the ports of Naples, Gibraltar, Genoa and Messina. Sheppard’s foreign tours continued between 1888 and 1893, with stays in Paris and Venice, where he captured the architecture and busy canals of the Floating City. This fondness for travel also translated to his home country. He sailed along the East Coast from New Jersey to Maine in search of subjects and was an expert navigator, eventually writing the book Practical Navigation. Yacht design became a second career for Sheppard and he participated in a number of sailing competitions himself, most notably winning the New York-to-Bermuda race twice while skipper of the Tamerlane. Sheppard exhibited at the Denver Exposition, Chicago Exposition...
