About the Item
Hilding Werner (1880-1944) was a Swedish artist known for his portraits, romantic landscape paintings of Värmland, and caricature drawings. We are privileged to present one of his captivating works for sale - "Moonlight Over Krokvattnet (near Glafsfjorden)".
The canvas, a long piece measuring 42.5 x 77 cm, beautifully captures a scene near Glafsfjorden in Värmland, Sweden. The composition is thoughtfully arranged with land in the foreground, meandering water, a peninsula on the right, and blue mountains in the background. The painting virtually radiates the stunning moonlight that illuminates the scene. The sky, a blend of white and grey clouds, acts as a perfect backdrop for the moonlight that shines and reflects so beautifully on the water. There is a poignant, almost melancholy, atmosphere that envelops the scene. In the foreground on the right, a small red cottage adds a touch of warmth and a sense of human presence to the otherwise tranquil and solitary landscape.
Werner's talent in capturing the nuances of light and the natural beauty of the Värmland landscape is evident in this painting. The almost ethereal quality of the moonlight, the gentle reflection in the water, and the subtle interplay of colors create a mesmerizing and evocative image.
Born to the landowner Anders Andersson and Inga Maria Johannesdotter, Werner's artistic journey began at Caleb Althin's painting school in Stockholm in 1899. He also earned side income as a caricature artist for the newspaper Nya Nisse. His acquaintance with Richard Bergh led him to participate in the Konstnärsförbundet's (Artists' Association) second painting school in 1900-1901. Despite making only one study trip abroad to the Netherlands in 1905, Werner's artistry was influenced by other notable artists such as Gustaf Fjæstad and Otto Hesselbom, whom he encountered during his travels within Sweden.
Werner was one of the initiators of the Värmland Artists' Association and his art, including satirical drawings, was featured in a special exhibition by the Värmland Museum in 2015. He is also represented in the Värmland Museum's collection.
"Moonlight Over Krokvattnet" is not just a painting; it is a journey into the night, a dance of light and shadow, and a reflection of Werner's deep connection to the landscape of Värmland. Owning this painting is an opportunity to possess a piece of Swedish art history and the legacy of Hilding Werner.

Hilding Werner (1880–1944) was a Swedish painter whose name is closely tied to the landscapes of Värmland. His lyrical depictions of lakes, forests, and skies at dawn or dusk capture the poetry of nature with quiet intensity, earning him a place among the most distinctive landscape painters of his generation. Werner was born in Kårud, Värmland, and grew up surrounded by the wilderness that would remain the central motif of his art. After secondary school in Karlstad, he moved to Stockholm in 1899 to pursue artistic training. He studied at Caleb Althin’s painting school and later at the Artists’ Association School (Konstnärsförbundet) under Richard Bergh. During this time, Werner also supported himself as a caricaturist for the satirical magazine Nya Nisse.
Influenced by Bergh and introduced to a circle of progressive artists through his cousin Bror Lindh, Werner absorbed ideas about painting directly from nature and imbuing landscapes with atmosphere and emotion. He briefly traveled to the Netherlands in 1905 but soon returned to Sweden, drawn back by the serenity of his native Värmland.
In 1907 Werner settled permanently in Stömne, on the shores of Hammartjärnet. There, he transformed a small lakeside cottage into his studio and devoted himself almost entirely to painting the surrounding countryside. His work focused on the subtle shifts of light across water, the silhouettes of pines against glowing skies, and the quiet stillness of snowy forests. Werner preferred transitional times of day—sunset, twilight, and pale winter afternoons—when nature seemed most contemplative. His brushwork, while rooted in careful observation, revealed a refined sensitivity to color and mood, creating landscapes at once intimate and expansive.
Werner’s career brought him into contact with several key figures of Swedish art. He was a friend of Gustaf Fjaestad, central to the Rackstad artists’ colony, and in 1912 visited Otto Hesselbom, whose grand vistas of lakes and skies inspired Werner to embrace more panoramic compositions. Yet his style remained distinct—gentler, more lyrical, and imbued with personal reflection.
Though he exhibited regularly with artists’ associations and local societies, Werner never sought the limelight and refrained from holding a solo exhibition during his lifetime. His modesty meant that wider recognition came only after his death, with a memorial exhibition at Värmlands Museum in 1946.
Today, Hilding Werner is celebrated as a painter who gave voice to the spirit of Värmland. His works are represented in museum and private collections, admired for their serene beauty and atmospheric depth. Collectors value not only his mastery of mood and light but also the authenticity of his vision: a life lived in harmony with the landscape he painted. His canvases remain timeless invitations into the quiet poetry of Sweden’s natural world.

Evening twilight on the river - is a painting in which the light of a beautiful sunset merges with the mysterious waters of the river. This artwork immerses us in the atmosphere of a quiet and calm evening, when the sun is already setting behind the horizon, and the sky is painted in various shades of orange, yellow and pink. The trees, slowly plunging into darkness, add a special mystery to this landscape. The reflection of heavenly light and trees on the surface of the river creates a feeling of soft tonal shimmer. Graner paints this work, Moonlit on the river, during his stay in the United States in the last stage of his artistic life, from 1910 to 1928, in full stage of maturity.
This artwork reflects the constant search of the artist for the effects of light in his work. This persistent concern for light remains throughout his artistic life, which he learned in his Parisian stage under the influence of the painter Frances Platour.
The silver light of the moon and the small lights at distance, which are tiny foci of artificial light, reflecting the river water, forming a chromatic range of greens, ocher and pearly that give a certain mystery to the composition, creating a modern approach to the landscape, by placing the two large trees at the edge of the river in the foreground
Luís Graner y Arrufí, Spanish (1863–1929) was a Catalan painter in the Realistic style.
He was born in Barcelona, and studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1883, with Antoni Caba (color/composition) and Benet Mercadé (drawing).
During his final year at school, he received a grant to study in Madrid, where he copied and learned from the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado. After that, supported by a fellowship, he moved to Paris and became a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Later, he returned to Barcelona, but continued to travel to cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf.
Influenced by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (Total Work of Art), he was motivated to create his own total art experience and organized the "Sala Mercè" (Mercy Hall) in Barcelona's Rambla District. The project involved contributors from every artistic discipline, including the new field of cinematography. The room was decorated by Antoni Gaudí. Other participants included Adrià Gual, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas...
