"Roofs of Paris"

2015

About the Item

"This painting depicts a winter cityscape with the dominant silhouette of a domed building, possibly a cathedral or palace. The painting is executed in light, pastel colors, with a predominance of white, gray, pinkish and blue shades, which creates the effect of a frosty, snowy morning. In the front part of the composition one can see buildings with snow-covered roofs, as well as trees with thick snowy crowns, painted with thick strokes. The central place is occupied by a majestic building with a large dome and towers, decorated with architectural details partially hidden under the snow. The artist uses the technique of volumetric strokes, creating a textural effect of snow, ice and winter air. A signature can be seen in the lower corner of the painting, probably indicating the author and the date of creation of the work. In general, the work conveys a sense of winter silence and the harmony of urban architecture with nature."

Unframed. Image size: 14.25"H x 20.25"W Westchiloff is an American-Russian artist. He was born in Russia in 1877, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg; as an artist, he traveled extensively in Europe and in the USA. He finally settled in New England, where he died in 1945. He is probably best-known for seascapes (particularly of the New England coastline) but was also well regarded for his landscapes, portraits and figures, and genre subjects. His work, especially after his travels in Europe and then in America, is closest to Impressionist in style. His favored medium was oil, which was well suited to his confident and strong technique. This, in turn, imbued his paintings of the rugged landscapes and seascapes of New England...
