About the Item
Jack Barnett's skyscapes and landscapes reflect the quiet sensual joy of looking at—and being in—nature. Both expansive and intimate, the paintings survey areas he explores, and their changing seasons, on drives from his home south of Fort Worth, Texas.
Jack Barnett says:
"Flat land and big skies always inspire me. Many paintings come from surprise discoveries made while driving on country roads and gazing at shifting light. I stop and look for a long time and supplement direct observation with sketches and photographs. In the end, memories and emotions mean more to me than exact topography."
Born in 1944 in Fort Worth, Barnett saved lunch money to buy his first set of paints, then built his first studio at age 14. Drawing and painting whenever possible, he committed himself to being an artist after seeing the paintings of George Inness and Thomas Eakins on a high school field trip. After living in Galveston and New Orleans, Barnett attended Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) where he won numerous awards and a travel scholarship to study masterworks in Europe. He taught at PAFA and started a picture framing business, and continued teaching and framing after returning to Texas in 1985.
Jack Barnett’s works are in museum collections including The Butler Institute of American Art, Picker Art Gallery, The Old Jail Art Center, and Tyler Museum of Art. In 2012, the Tyler Museum of Art presented a solo exhibition of his portraits and figures.
