Jacopo Fabris
18th Century Venice Jacopo Fabris Venice Rialto Bridge Oil on Canvas Blue

About the Item

Painting oil on canvas measuring 70 x 90 cm without frame and 82 x 102 cm with frame depicting View of the Grand Canal with the Rialto Bridge. The work under examination depicting a broad view of the Grand Canal with the Rialto Bridge in the distance is to be considered a valuable pictorial document linked to the youthful activity of Jacopo fabris ( Venice 1689 - Copenhagen 1761 ). To date, the latter represents a rather nebulous personality for artistic historiography, although, unlike other 18th century masters active in the lagoon, his biography is outlined in key stages. Documentary sources report that he moved to northern Europe starting in 1719, the year he was appointed court painter in Karlsruhe, where he was mainly involved in decorations and theater decorations. After abandoning this engagement, Jacopo was registered in Hamburg as director of the city's opera house, where he was engaged in a rich scenic and illustrative production. Leaving the German city in 1730, he moved to Manheim and later to Berlin, working for Peter the Great, a lover of opera and eager to build magnificent stage sets. After an intense and rewarding activity at court, Fabris undertook his last journey to Denmark in the service of Frederick V, where he had the opportunity to range over different areas, even arriving at a treatise on architecture in 1760. From what we have reported, vedutistic production is marginal in the work of the Venetian master who specialized in theatrical settings, although scewnography represented a sister art to landscape painting and vedute in the 18th century. In the light of this premise, the painting in question acquires enlightening evidence, as it documents Fabris' early production in the Marciano capital in which he elaborated a personal pictorial alphabet, albeit modelled on contemporary references. In this case, attention should be drawn to Bernardo Canal with whom our artist shares the very clear and defined luministic effects, as well as the characteristic physiognomy of the clouds, highlighted by Morassi in his fundamental contribution on the artist. An autograph view by fabris with the same bridge, staraordianly similar to ours in the definition of the compositional ingredients, from the aforementioned clouds to the well-turned macchiette, evocative of homologous characters transposed onto canvas by apollonio Facchinetti but characterised by a more solid and turned phisicity. The paintings and works of art published here are my exclusive property and therefore are always available to be viewed, by appointment, in my exhibition sites located in Sanremo and Brescia.
