About the Item

Jacques Martin-Ferrière (1903–2001) was a French painter and one of the prominent figures in the Neo-Impressionist movement. Born in Paris, he initially trained as an artist and was deeply influenced by the work of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, pioneers of the pointillist technique. Martin-Ferrière's work evolved through the early 20th century, where he adopted pointillism but also incorporated elements of modernism, fusing color theory with personal expression and emotional depth. Though he worked across various styles throughout his career, it was his pointillist works that garnered the most acclaim. He applied the technique in a way that was both scientifically informed and emotionally evocative, focusing on light, atmosphere, and the dynamic interplay of color. His landscapes, portraits, and still lifes created with minute dots of color captured the nuances of natural light and created a sense of movement and emotional depth
