About the Item
Moody Nocturne of the Monterey Coast in Oil
Beautifully rendered painting of waves crashing into a rocky cove by James Dalton (American b. 1922.) Moonlight shines through the dark and cloudy sky and illuminates the horizon in deep blue in the background of this piece. The large waves and sea spray hitting the rocks in the foreground are also illuminated by the moonlight, bringing out green highlights. Water appears to stream off the rocks on both the left side and bottom right corner of the piece. The rocks are rendered in warm browns, adding more depth and complexity to the palette of the piece.
Signed "Jim Dalton" in bottom left corner.

James Dalton was born in Clinton, Missouri in 1922. He studied art at the Memphis Academy of Art and then earned a BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute. He exhibited throughout the Midwest, including at the Art Institute of Chicago where he won the 1st prize Purchase Award. He moved to California in 1950s, where he became known for his landscapes and seascapes of the Monterey coast. Known for his watercolor, and egg tempera landscape renderings.
Dalton exhibited his works at the Midwest Art Association, Kansas State College, Kansas City Art Institute, and was a 1st prize Purchase Award winner at the Art Institute of Chicago.
In the late 1950's he settled on the Monterey Peninsula where he painted and exhibited widely.

Stephen John Skerce (American, 1926-2010) was a painter from Monterey, California. He received his formal art training from the Chicago Art Institute, Salinas Art School, and the Academie Julien in Paris, France. He is known for his landscapes, seascapes, and harbor scenes. He was an artist with both the Valley Art Gallery in Salinas and Venture Gallery in Monterey. He was also served in the US Marine Corps.
