A large scale landscape painting of a horse and cart outside a cottage by James Edwin Meadows. A farmer and his dog can be seen standing next to a team of horses and cart on a country track. As he stops outside a cottage, three children can be seen watching on by the front gate. At the time of this painting, Meadows was living at Acton Cottage in Acton.
James Edwin Meadows or James Edward Meadows was born in Mountnessing, Essex in 1826 to James Meadows Snr (1798-1864) and Ann Cross. He came from a family of artists; his father was a talented painter of inshore and coastal scenes and his brothers William George Meadows (1825-1907), Alfred John (1833-1894), Edwin Lewis Meadows (1838-1907) and Arthur Joseph Meadows (1843-1907) were all artists. The family lived in Old Town, Clapham and later 12 Coborn Street in Bow. His father taught all of his sons to paint and was an influence on their style and subject matter.
Meadows began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1853 and by the time of his marriage to Eliza Ann Rackcliffe, a widow, on 10 March, 1854, had established himself as an artist. The couple spent the first few years of their married life living at Harleyford Street in Kennington from where he made his debut at the Royal Academy in the summer of 1854. He began exhibiting at the British Institution from 1855 and also exhibited at some of the major provincial galleries such as Walker Art Galleries, Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Hibernian Academy.
By 1861, he was living with his wife and four children at Acton Cottage, Acton Green, later moving to Essex Villa in Acton in 1864. Two of his daughters Alice and Julia Anne also became artists and may well have helped him in his studio. Sometime during the mid to late 1870’s he made his final move to Gainsborough house at no 2 Aldine street, Shepherd’s Bush where he remained for the rest of his life. There is strong evidence to suggest a connection between the artist Jane Vivian, who exhibited from both these addresses and the Meadows family. It is possible that Vivian was a pseudonym of one of his children, or perhaps Meadows himself.
From his base in London, he travelled around England painting landscape views of Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight for which he became best known. The composition of his paintings are highly appealing, often containing figures, cottages, dogs and other animals such as ducks, which have made his works as popular and sought after today as they were in his lifetime. During the last decade of his life, as well as continuing to paint he also became a professor of painting. He died at his home in Aldine Street on 21 July, 1893. Examples of his work can be found in the Wolverhampton Art Gallery and the Ramsgate Library.
Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

Henry Schafer was born in Hanover, Germany in 1841. Although little is known about his upbringing, he was known to have studied at the l'Ecole National de Beaux-Arts in Paris. After leaving art school, he travelled throughout Europe painting town scenes and buildings of Northern France, Belgium and Germany. By 1864, Schafer had travelled to England with his wife Theresa, to work in London where they settled and started a family. All four of their children were born in England. One of his daughters Emilie Anna Schafer (1871-1937) became a painter and art teacher.
Around 1871, the family were living at 53 Vauxhall Bridge Road and in 1881 were recorded as residing at 6, Sophia Terrace, Beulah Road, Thornton Heath in Surrey, with Henry continuing to work as an artist. By 1891, he had moved to 7 St Peters Road in Islington where he lived for the rest of his life. Sometime around the turn of the century, he became a British subject. Schafer is believed to have died in London c1914.
Many of his works depict the architecture of gothic cathedrals and churches, as in these two fine examples. He also produced interior studies of churches. Schafer's style resembles that of Alfred Montague...

A fantastic exhibition sized landscape painting of sheep on a cliff top by the coast by Charles ‘Sheep’ Jones. At the time he produced this painting, Jones was living at Heathercroft, Balham Hill in London. Given the size and quality of the work it was most likely an exhibition piece. The topography and landscape suggest that this is the Dorset coast, one of his favourite places to paint.
Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
By 1867, he had become a successful artist and they had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874 he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. Jones became well known for specialising in paintings of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. He spent his time travelling around visiting areas such as Devon, Dorset, Kent, Sussex and the Highlands. However, it is for his skilful painting of sheep that he is perhaps best known, and for which earned him the nickname of ‘Sheep’ Jones.
As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings.
