James Longueville
James Longueville, River Orwell with sailing boats

About the Item

Beautiful light in this view of the river Orwell in Suffolk, close to Pin Mill. James Longueville (born 1943) Mist clearing, Pin Mill Signed Oil on board 16 x 24 excluding frame 22 x 30 inches with the frame James Longueville was born in 1942 at Waverton, Chester. Originally pursuing a career in journalism, he turned to painting professionally in 1972. His first major subject was his native South Cheshire landscape and as his style developed throughout the decade, he also travelled and painted in Italy and Sardinia. Working in oil, pastel and watercolour James successfully captures the sense of luminosity and atmosphere of the Venetian canals, the sense of light, glory and hustle and bustle of the Thames and London’s City, the dramatic and rugged coastline of Wales, and the tranquility of Norfolk’s salt marshes. His work is traditionally figurative, taking strong inspiration from the likes of Seago, Constable, the New Romantics and equally from the great European landscape painters. In his land and cityscapes Longueville has assimilated these influences and developed his own distinctive palette and style as a way of expressing the atmosphere of his subjects. During the 1980’s Longueville’s popularity grew and he exhibited widely around Britain and Ireland. He travels frequently seeking new subjects and enjoys portraying different light qualities. France is a favourite location with its strong light and unique panoramas. James is a senior member of the Pastel Society, having been elected in 1983 and has won the Patterson Pastel Award twice. He has exhibited in Ireland, Canada and Holland. His work hangs in public and private collections around the world. He has exhibited regularly in the Mall Galleries, London and with the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Pastel Society of which he was elected a member in 1983. James has shown in the Royal Academy and his work now hangs by invitation in the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists collection, he was elected a full member of the RBSA in 1989.

  • Vermillion at Lee's Ferry ( Plein Air Landscape painting sky blue terracotta)
    By Jane Chapin
    Located in Cody, WY
This is a 'Plein Air" landscape Painting by Jane Chapin as seen in the viewing room exhibition on Silas VON MORISSE GALLERY. “Plein-Air” is the French expression to describe the act of painting in situ within the landscape, capturing the ever changing weather and light with tonal qualities, colour, loose brushwork and softness of form... The practice of “Plein Air Painting” goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir who were advocating of plein air painting. Much of their work was done outdoors in the diffuse light of a large white umbrella. Another major proponent of Plein Air was Jean Baptiste Camille Corot whom Claude Monet considered as “The only One Master here”. Corot provides a transition from the sharp academic style that ruled in his day with focus on the natural world and the lyrical expressiveness of one's work. With her "Plein Air Paintings", Jane Chapin is part of one of the largest art movements in history. Her paintings carry human emotions. We can read her moods and feelings with places that carry deep remembrances for the artist that go beyond the descriptive. "My paintings grow from observing and interpretating light as it emerges from, surrounds and reflects on everyday people and scenes. They seek to remind us of the beauty of our common surroundings, regardless of where we are." - Jane Chapin Jane Chapin Painting the Land of the Free...
