Miss Jane Vivian (De Fleury) (Fl. 1869 to 1893) British The Scuola Grande di San Marco, Venice (Viewed from the West Wing of The Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, with the Ponte del Cavallo). Oil on canvas: 30 x 50 in. Frame:40 x60 in. Signed lower left. Circa 1870. Recent research into the work of this artist has revealed a dynasty of topographical artists who worked and lived in England. J de Fleury flourished from 1799 to 1823 and was a landscape painter who mainly worked in Wales but lived in London and was a regular exhibitor in the major London exhibitions between 1799 & 1823. His son was James Vivian de Fleury who painted mainly abroad, specializing in views of Switzerland and Italy. He exhibited between 1847 & 1868. J.V. de Fleury had many addresses in London during this time. Miss J. Vivian first exhibits a view of Venice from a London address in 1869 and continues to exhibit mainly Italian views until 1877. Around 1880 she seems to have moved, as did her father, as their next exhibiting address is Islington Row, Birmingham where she continued to exhibit work until 1888. The name J.V. de Fleury reappears at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Birmingham Society exhibitions in 1892 & 1893. Although she also painted riverscapes and lake views of other European cities such as Bruges and Rouen, it is for her Venetian scenes that she is perhaps best known. Her work shows an attention to detail that is a reflection of her father’s technique but there is a lightness of touch and softness in the palate, which is considered even finer. A number of her works can be found at the Croydon Art Collection, Shipley Art Gallery, Newstead Abbey, Haworth Art Gallery, North Down Borough Council and Oldham Gallery. Gallery note: This very atmospheric painting is one of the largest and finest works recorded by Jane Vivian and has a wonderful contrast of light and shade. Relined mid-20th century and recently cleaned and restored by our gallery.
