About the Item

Embankment. 1970, paper, etching, 26,5x50,5 cm Jazeps Delvers (1910-1984) Jazeps Delvers born in Daugavpils in postal workers family. In Daugavpils he received secondary education. From 1924 to 1929 he studied at the Daugavpils Teachers Institute, where drawing was taught artist Grinberga-Cimmermane. There he realized that he wants to be an artist. Being artistically talented, he has set goal of higher education aim, and in 1931 he entered in Art Academy of Latvia. First he studied at Professor Wilhelm Purvītis who was head of landscape painting studio, but later moved to the graphic studio under the guidance of assistant professor K.Krauze. Tools for education and life, he was forced to look for hisself, so paralle with studies he worked in different places. This slowed down his education and only in 1942 J.Delvers graduated from the Art Academy of graphic workshop with diploma - "In work" in etching technique of and received a diploma as graphic artist. Since 1940 Jazeps Delvers regularly participated in exhibitions both in Riga and in Latgale - Daugavpils, Rezekne and Aglona. In 1944 in Riga, in the salon "Zinta", he held his first solo exhibition. Next solo exhibition was held in Riga in 1969. During the Soviet era J. Delvers participated almost at all national exhibitions. In 1958 J. Delvers became a member of the Artist`s Union of Latvia. The easel graphics J. Delvers worked mainly in the traditional technique of etching, creating rich with nuances and details compositions of the landscape genre, "The Mill" (1942), "Gauja in Turaida" (1957), "Staburags" (1957), "Lielupe in Dzintari"(1967)" Panorama of Riga HPP "(1978). In the graphic, he turned to the theme of ancient Riga "Riga 17.century" (1968), "Riga. The ANNO 1612" (1963). J. Delver etchings characterized as a very carefully-designed, and a good sense of rhythm works. In book design J. Delver mainly worked in technique of ink, the most important work - woodcarving illustration K.F.Meiera "Angela Borgia" (1943-1944). The artist illustrated A.Upisha "Sūnu ciema zēnus" (1946), H.Fildinga "story of the foundling Tom Jones" (1955), M.Tvena "Heklberija Fina adventures" (1952) and others. In his illustrations for books, the artist focus on story. Jazeps Delvers is the first professional artist who started illustrating Latgale`s authors books. He created illustrations, merged with the narrative sincerity, warmth and sonority of linear rhythm. Aartist also worked in applied graphics. Jazeps Delvers died on 11 October, 1984 in Riga.

Rare Engraving "Cabane Des Hold, Terres Artiques, Fig CII," 1st edition "Description de l’Univers, page 281 This rare image depicts the Willem Barentsz expedition of 1597 to Novaya Zemlya, Russia. The engraving, with later hand-coloring, shows the cabin and ship of the Dutch arctic expedition of Barentsz on Novaya Zemlya (Nova Zembla), with the party being attacked (and in some cases apparently eaten) by bears and wolves. Dutch explorer, Willem Barentsz, reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya in 1594, and in a subsequent expedition of 1596 rounded the northern point and wintered on the northeast coast. Barentsz died during the expedition, and may have been buried on the northern island. This artwork is a page from a book by 17th century cartographer and engineer, Allain Manesson Mallet (French, 1630-1706), "Description de L'Univers, contenant les differents systêmes du monde, les cartes générals et particulières de la géographie ancienne et modern."
