Jean Robert Ithier (1904-1977) Ars en Ré, view of the church oil on canvas signed lower left 80.5 x 60 cm No frame The church of Ars en Ré, a pittoresque village on the atlantic island of Ré is very famous for its black and white bell tower. It was used as an "amer" as lighthouse these buildings could be seen from distance on the sea by daytime and were used to guide the boats. Jean-Robert Ithier gives a dramatic and striking interpretation of the place. The role of the tree on the right is decisive to give this feeling of loneliness and tragic beauty. Jean-Robert Ithier was a french painter, born on 11 september 1904 in Villemomble and dead on 9 march 1977 in Sevran. He painted landscapes and Paris views. He exhibited at the Salon des indépendants from 1926 onward and throughtout France and other countries. One of his painting is held by the Paris Museums. Literature : Benezit t 7 p 387
