About the Item

Calendar illustration commissioned by Exxon for their “Great Moments in American History” calendar series, published 1966. This illustration depicting the first emigrant train’s arrival at Fort Laramie vividly captures the nascent wave of westward migration along the Oregon Trail, a critical thoroughfare that fueled America's mid-19th-century expansion. Established in 1834, Fort Laramie quickly became an indispensable haven for these intrepid travelers. Beyond offering crucial respite and the opportunity to replenish essential supplies, provisions, and services, the fort stood as a significant landmark on their challenging westward journey, undertaken by pioneering families, ambitious settlers, and those drawn by the allure of the goldfields. The Oregon Trail, a confluence of routes originating from diverse eastern locales, served as the conduit for this transformative movement that reshaped the American landscape. Metal plaque on lower center on wood frame with title and artist name. Additional labels / tags on verso. Commissioned by Exxon. Work window measures 21" x 26 3/8" in length. Frame measures 26" x 31 1/2".
