About the Item

Jim Stoker describes himself as an Artist-Naturalist, endeavoring to express his reverence for wildlife through his richly-colored paintings. In his love for the vivid and varied colors of native Central Texas plants, Stoker developed the technique which he refers to as “confetti-splatter.” Splattering colored paints over a layer of hand-cut paper confetti on the canvas, Stoker scrapes off the paper bits to reveal a lively and intricate textural ground. The resulting bright and irregular patchwork creates a canvas surface suitable to hold Stoker’s beloved subject of the Guadalupe River. In a 2013 Artist Statement, Stoker explains his relationship with his subject matter: “Being able to study riparian features during all seasons, over a long period of time, makes it possible to better understand the ecological balance of the Guadalupe environment. As a result, subject matter for oil paintings has become more personal, reflecting our life and awareness of river ecology, in a manner that someone just passing by could never understand." "Science is an important part of my studies. I have learned about the exquisite interrelationships that bind all life forms into one complex system. Riparian areas occur on both sides of a stream, including the entire drainage system. A healthy river bottom is covered by thick vegetation, which most people do not understand in their belief that it is too overgrown and shaggy. This painter wants to paint from understanding and knowledge, not merely to search for scenic views. Understanding the world around us has been important to my development as a creative person.” Jim Stoker was born in Nash, Texas in 1935, and grew up in Atlanta, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a BFA in Applied Art in 1957. His teaching career culminated in a 30-year tenure at Trinity University in San Antonio, where he retired as Professor of Art, Emeritus, in 1996. His work is in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, The Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Austin, the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, and the San Antonio Museum of Art. Valley House Gallery has exhibited Jim Stoker’s work since 2006, and published a catalogue for the exhibition, “Jim Stoker: 50 Year Retrospective,” in 2011. The dimensions including the frame are 31 1/8 x 41 inches.

By Melinda Hackett

Hackett’s paintings defy popular convention. They are not figurative, decorative, representative, or even completely abstract. While it is hard to tie them to any one style or movement, they manage to be a part of all of them. Hackett’s work is influenced by pattern, midcentury design, art of indigenous peoples, and the art and craft movement, combined with a loose examination of the natural world. She creates a visual environment that is both recognizable yet strangely mysterious. While steeped in art history and influenced by a range of artists from Miro to Arthur Dove, Charles Burchfield, Agnes Pelton, Florine Stettheimer...

Everything is Early (Colorful Autumn colors Large Abstract Oil painting, Nature)
By Richmond Burton
Located in Cody, WY
Richmond Burton’s works are known for their kaleidoscopic color, undulating patterns, and lyrical handling of expressionistic mark making. His Visceral, seductive, and organic compositions play with decorative patterning without compromising a conceptual backbone. Their intensity of vision allows for transcendent thought, experience, and connection while challenging any preconceived norms or rules defining abstract painting. “Structure is never absent; it’s just uninsistent, even accidental. The paintings are built up in stages, but never give the impression of being hard-worked. They have a fluid, textural presence, like luxury fabrics printed with overlapping, off-register layers of patterning.” — Holland Cotter, The New York Times (1999). Richmond Burton (b. 1960, Talladega, AL) obtained a BA in architecture from Rice University Houston, TX (1984). He lives and works in Woodstock, NY. Burton has shown extensively both domestically and internationally and has work in the collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; The Broad, Los Angeles, CA; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, NY; and National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, among others. Recent solo exhibitions include venues such as Sarah Moody Gallery of Art at University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL (2015); Silas Marder Gallery, Bridgehampton, NY (2014); Philip Slein Gallery, St. Louis, MO (2013); and George Lawson...
