About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
Step into the heart of London with Jo Quigley’s Early Summer on the Southbank, a captivating cityscape that brings the vibrant energy of one of the city's most iconic locales to life. This acrylic painting, executed in a contemporary impressionistic style, invites viewers to immerse themselves in the dynamic scene of the Southbank on a warm summer day.
The artwork masterfully captures a bustling afternoon along the Southbank promenade, where people meander with a blend of leisure and purpose. Some are absorbed in their phones, embodying the modern rhythm of city life, while others engage in lively conversations, their gestures and expressions frozen in time. This juxtaposition of modern technology and human interaction highlights the ever-evolving nature of urban experiences.
The scene is set against a backdrop of lush, verdant trees with vibrant green leaves that bring a refreshing burst of color to the composition. The silhouette of Big Ben, standing gracefully across the river, serves as a timeless anchor amidst the fluidity of contemporary life. Its presence not only grounds the scene in its London setting but also subtly contrasts the historical with the modern.
The color scheme—comprising various shades of green, blue, and grey—evokes a serene yet invigorating summer atmosphere. The greens of the trees and the blues of the river meld harmoniously with the grey of the cityscape, creating a visual symphony that captures both the tranquility and vitality of the season.
Quigley's use of color and brushwork conveys the essence of early summer in London, a time when the city’s energy is both palpable and soothing. The interplay of light and shadow across the pavement adds depth and movement to the scene, making it feel as though it’s in constant flux, much like the city itself.
This artwork is not just a representation of a place but a celebration of the everyday moments that make urban life unique. The signed canvas is ready to be displayed, offering a window into the heart of London and a reminder of the beauty found in its bustling streets.
Artist Biography:
Jo Quigley graduated with a BA from Winchester School of Art and an MA in Applied Fine Art from Kingston University. Her confident and distinctive work quickly gained a growing reputation, making her pieces highly sought after.
People in the urban environment provide endless fascination for Jo, and much of her work is composed from photographs taken during visits to London. She quietly observes people going about their daily lives, capturing subjects that appear completely natural and un-staged, as they are unaware of being seen. Jo prefers locations where people gather in crowds, resulting in paintings that are both intimate and intense. She aims for viewers to feel involved in the depicted scenes, perhaps even seeing themselves in the crowd. Jo's influences include Pissarro, Hopper, and Lowry, which is evident in her work's depth and observational quality. Her use of deep tray frames adds an elegant, contemporary look to her paintings.
Jo is a prizewinning artist and has been shortlisted for several major awards, including BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year 2011, Surrey Artist of the Year 2011, and Artist and Illustrators Artist of the Year in 2013 and 2014.
