DESCRIPTION This magnificent oil painting by Joan Vives Llull depicts the port of Mahón, the capital of Menorca, in a luminous and vibrant composition. The scene features the characteristic white houses stacked on the hillside, crowned by churches and ancient walls, while boats and sailboats rest on waters that gently reflect the tones of the sky and architecture. The energetic and impasto brushstroke, clearly influenced by Impressionism, masterfully conveys the Mediterranean light. The colors—deep blues, pure whites, and warm ochres—evoke the unique atmosphere of the Balearic Islands and infuse the scene with a nearly tactile vitality that invites the viewer to immerse themselves in the landscape. ABOUT THE ARTIST Joan Vives Llull (1901–1982) is considered the great renovator of 20th-century Menorcan art. Trained at the School of Pollença, where he was influenced by Hermen Anglada-Camarasa, he embraced a modern, free, and luminous approach to landscape painting, distancing himself from the academic style then prevalent in the Balearic Islands. His work focuses on port scenes and landscapes of Menorca, Mallorca, and Ibiza, capturing light and atmosphere with a personal, direct style marked by strong chromatic expression. In addition to his artistic career, he was a drawing teacher in Maó and directed the municipal art school, fostering the education of new generations of artists on the island. RELATED ARTISTS Vives Llull’s work connects with the great interpreters of Mediterranean light, such as: Joaquim Mir – for his intense color palette and landscape compositions. Eliseo Meifrén – for his vibrant treatment of seascapes and harbors. Hermen Anglada-Camarasa – through the legacy of the Pollença School and expressive use of color. Santiago Rusiñol and Joaquín Sorolla – for their sensitivity in capturing Mediterranean atmospheres.
