About the Item

Joel Sager (1980) was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri, the son of a minister and a stay-at-home mother who fostered from an early age his love of drawing and painting. It was under the mentorship of prominent American illustrator Mark English that he began his artistic education in earnest. Inspired by his exposure to illustration yet gravitating in his studio practice toward more painterly work, Sager developed a distinctive style within the larger models of regionalism and American realism. Sager’s work is deeply rooted in the Midwestern landscape, particularly rural Missouri, which has served as a primary source of inspiration. The subjects of his paintings—often local figures, landscapes, and domestic scenes—reflect his close connection to his environment and the people he knows personally. His body of work is characterized by a stark, almost austere realism, with an emphasis on atmosphere, light, and mood. Sager’s technique is notable for its detailed rendering, sgraffito, and collage to create textures that evoke the tactile quality of the subjects being depicted. Throughout his career, Sager’s work has been highly collected for its ability to capture the emotional and psychological depth of his subjects. His paintings often convey a sense of stillness, quiet tension, and a certain melancholy, reflecting his interest in themes of isolation, memory, and the passage of time

Amanda Horvath, Moonlight Phantasy, Contemporary Woodland Painting
By Amanda Horvath
Located in Deddington, GB
Moonlight Phantasy [2021] Original Acrylics on canvas Image size: H:30 cm x W:30 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:30 cm x W:30 cm x D:3.5cm Sold Unframed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look "Moonlight Phantasy" comes from a lovely wood near my home in the High Peak. When the moon is full you can walk in the evening and it feels almost as light as day. The wood is quiet with dark tones of the trees creating shadows in the pale moonlight. An original artwork, one of a kind, this painting has been created with high quality acrylic paints on deep edged canvas. I begin with observation of the place making notes and taking photographs to work from in the studio. From these beginnings I work intuitively, painting some base layers with a brush and then impasto techniques layer on layer applied with a palette knife. Harnessing optical mixing techniques employed by the impressionists and some of the methods of the old masters such as scumbling and glazing. I continue working until the painting reaches a natural conclusion. The result is a contemporary painting, which lies somewhere between abstraction and realism. The painting continues round the sides, a frame is not needed and it is ready to hang. Amanda Horvath...

This Changes Everything (Landscape, Mixed media, forest, sun, trees, night)
By Rachelle Krieger
Located in New York, NY
Acrylic, spraypaint, oilbar, oil on linen Faint signature at bottom center of painting in silver. See photo. During the days of painting en plein air, Krieger describes how she began to dream about painting while sleeping, and thus turned those night visions into this series of night time paintings. In these, we see the landscape transformed into a dream-like setting. These surrealist imaginings of the natural world place Krieger’s paintings within a cohort of contemporary women painters reimagining the tradition of the landscape genre, such as Shara Hughes...

Forest Meditations, Original Painting
By Candice Eisenfeld
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Candice Eisenfeld draws inspiration from the silhouetted trees of the rainforests of Northern Georgia. "One early morning as the fog was clearing, a hawk guided me through the mountains," shares Candice. "The hawk led me through ethereal, meditative places with overwhelming beauty." She took photographs of her journey and painted her experiences of the adventure. "The bottom image depicts the rough, beginning of the journey and the scene portrays the ending. The rough, orange texture denotes the bark of the trees."

About the Artist
As an American exploring issues of identity, artist Candice Eisenfeld paints through the lens of the first American art movement, the Hudson River School. Rather than depicting a specific locale, Candice’s artwork evokes a sense of place. These "inner landscapes" are invented, and often reference photographs taken during travels in southern Appalachia and the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains. Whether real or imagined, her paintings are influenced by the Dutch Masters, Tonalists, and Chinese painting. Produced on a single wooden panel, the ethereal landscapes are often joined with segments of aqueous color fields which act as commentary for the landscapes, like the chorus in a Greek play. The crisp, hard edges separating the landscapes from the color fields command a sense of order in an otherwise fluid and painterly surface. With two or three sections of the panel competing for attention, the painting creates multiple focal points. Candice's art has been displayed in embassies in Namibia and Belarus, held in the collections of Norwest Bank and Northwest...
