About the Item

This depiction of a sunrise on a Winters day is a beautifully atmospheric oil on canvas painting by the artist Johann Jungblut. ‘Winter Day’ is an original work that is circa the 19th Century. Johann Jungblut was a German painter who focused on depicting winter landscapes of rural Netherlands, Germany, and Norway. Jungblut painted in a style which merged Impressionist techniques with the tradition of Dutch landscape painters like Aelbert Cuyp, Meindert Hobbema, and Jacob van Ruisdael. Jungblut’s icy landscapes are contrasted with works by Hans Thoma, a fellow German painter who portrayed pastoral vistas in a similar impressionist style. Both artists are expressive of Germany’s artistic tradition of immortalizing the Germanic landscape. Jungblut’s works are in the collection of The Institute in Keith, United Kingdom. The artist died on December 17, 1912 in Düsseldorf, Germany. E. Bénézit, DICTIONNAIRE DES PEINTRES, SCULPTEURS, DESSINATEURS ET GRAVEURS

Dutch Winter landscape with children playing on the ice by Per Wickenberg, 1839
Located in Stockholm, SE
Per Wickenberg was a Swedish artist active in the early 19th century. He was only 34 when he died of tuberculosis; thankfully for the art history - at that point, he had practised the art of painting for more than 20 years. After his art studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, he left Stockholm and travelled to Paris in 1837. In Paris, he finally received the well-deserved success for his landscapes; he won golden medals at the Salon de Paris both in 1838 for his painting "Nordiskt vinterlandskap" and in 1839 for a painting called "Vinterfiske". Per received a travel scholarship from Sweden and used that money for trips to Belgium and the Netherlands. Our painting is from that time, the time after his success in Paris, and in this magnificent painting, we see his talent in capturing the cold winter mood with meticulous care of details. Notice how nicely painted the children are on the ice, the sledge filled with hay to provide comfort and insulation against the cold. In the background, we can see an ice skater, a detail that gives the painting depth and three-dimensionality. This is a wonderful painting by a talented artist - who devoted almost his entire life to the art of painting. Artist: Per (Pehr) Wickenberg (1812-1846) Swedish Title: Dutch Winter landscape with children...

19th Century winter landscape oil painting of figures in a village
By Nils Hans Christiansen
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Nils H Christiansen Danish, (1850-1922) A Winter’s Evening Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 11.5 inches x 23.25 inches Size including frame: 16.25 inches x 28 inches A beautiful winter landscape scene of a village covered in snow at sunset. A mother and son carry firewood back to their nearby cottage whilst other figures continue on home past the lake. In the distance, a church spire is silhouetted against the warm colours of the disappearing sun. Nils or Niels Hans Christiansen was a well-accomplished painter born in Esbjerg in the Jutland peninsula of southwest Denmark on 22 July, 1850. He specialised in winter landscapes and moonlight scenes and was interested in the effects of light, often painting the sunrise and sunsets against his native land. He first came to England in 1863 for the Royal Wedding of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandria. Although he worked mainly in Denmark and Norway, he spent some time in England where he is believed to have exhibited with many of the leading art galleries in London. In addition to exhibiting in England, Christiansen also exhibited in his home country at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen where he became a member. He seems to have settled in England and on 10 September 1887 he married Alice Dickens at York Square, Stepney. Together the couple lived at 36 Dempsey Street, Mile End with their children. One of their sons, Albert Edward Christiansen (1887-1927) also became an artist. Christiansen’s success brought him royal connections and he was given a Grace and Favour apartment at Windsor by Queen Victoria. By 1901, he had become a British subject and had moved to 15 Queens Road in Plaistow, West Ham where he spent the rest of his life. He died in 1922 at Plaistow, aged 71. His paintings are always beautifully drawn and with the inclusion of figures give added interest to the viewer. A number of his works can be found in museums and art collections in England including Epping Forest...
