About the Item

Vibrant mid century landscape of Mount Whitney by John Alfred Coultrup (American, 1888-1982), Signed/inscribed in the paint "Coultrup" lower left. Presented in a rustic, period giltwood frame. Image, 25"H x 13"W. Coultrup typically inscribed his signature in script, "Coultrup", in the wet paint. John Alfred Coultrup was born in Kansas on April 11, 1888. Coultrup began his professional life as a chiropractor. He settled in Long Beach about 1915 and by 1920 he had a commercial art studio. In his leisure he painted hundreds of landscapes before his death in Long Beach on April 15, 1982. His grandson, Tom Coultrup has written: "John Alfred Coultrup was my great grandfather. He was born in Kansas in 1888 and moved to, and passed away in California in 1982. He enjoyed painting which were mostly in oil landscapes."
