About

John Frederick Tennant British, (1796-1872) The Wharf, Sunset after a Stormy Day Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1866 Image size: 35 inches x 59 inches Size including frame: 41 inches x 65 inches John Tennant was born in Camberwell, London in 1796. Little is known about his early education but he is known to have been a pupil of William Anderson. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1821 from an address at 1 Lower St Islington. He later moved to Newman Street but from 1832, he lived at Bexley Heath, Kent where he later met and married Eliza Laura Stiel on 20 Jun 1837 at Erith. As well as earning his living as an artist, Tennant taught art at the school in nearby Greenwich. He continued exhibiting at the Royal Academy and also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists where he was elected a member in 1842. Around this time they moved back to the London area living in Hendon and then Barnes where their daughter Laura was born. By 1861, the family had moved to Llangattock-Crickhowell in Wales where he painted many views of the River Usk and the mountains surrounding Abergavenny. During the last decade of his life, Tennant lived in Ilfracombe, Devon and continued to produce landscapes and riverscapes as well as coastal scenes. He died on 23 November 1872 at 27, Belsize Park Gardens, Hampstead. One of his friends wrote an obituary for the Abergavenny Chronicle describing him as ‘…the celebrated landscape painter, whose fame as an artist is world-wide… accomplished in mind, frank, straight-forward but most genial and winning in manner, the soul of honour… ’ Examples of his paintings are held by many public collections including the Blackburn Museum, Government Art Collection, Harris Museum, London Borough of Bexley, Maidstone Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, Towner Eastbourne and the Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The stretcher bears an old, handwritten exhibition label. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.
