About the Item

John Henry Rollin Tilton American, 1828 - 1888 Ruins of Kom Ombo Oil on canvas 31 1⁄2 x 49 1⁄2 inches Provenance: Private Collection, New York Cayen Collection, New York John Rollin Tilton was born in Merrimack, New Hampshire on June 28, 1828. He was initially self-taught, but then trained in Florence, and later in Rome, where he lived for many years. He died March 22, 1888 in Rome, Italy. He was a known artist in New York and Italy for his oil paintings of landscape, structure, marine, genre (human activity) artistry. His work can be found in the Museums of Fine Arts in Boston, San Diego, Brooklyn, and the Yale University Art Gallery. While in Rome, John Rollin Tilton and Westmore Story had their studio for their artwork in the European theater. Other names, who formed part of the expatriate community of American artists living in Rome during that period were Thomas H. Hotchkiss, Richard Bonington, Delacroix, and Elihu Vedder. Their paintings and John’s were placed on exhibition for the New York Historical Society. Tilton was influenced by European Orientalism, rendering vistas of archeological sites during his travels. His Oriental landscapes pay great attention to atmosphere, light and shadow, showing his concern with the elements of landscape was just as important as the rendition of exotic subjects.
